Zags will finish second round at Bill Cullum Invitational Tuesday
SIMI VALLEY, Calif. – The Gonzaga men's golf team sits in a tie for eighth place at the Bill Cullum Invitational Monday. Play was suspended in the second round due to darkness, and the Zags will complete the round Tuesday morning.
Gonzaga is nearly finished with the second round, three Bulldogs have already completed the round, while Tyler Munetake has two holes left and Matthew Ruel has one remaining.
"The wind was supposed to blow really hard today with steady winds in the upper 30's and gusts up near 60 mph," GU Head Coach Robert Gray said. "While it was very windy today with steady winds 20 - 30 mph and gusts near 40 mph at times, it never got near the forecasted speeds. While the winds were down from the forecast, the wind that did arrive provided plenty of a challenge. We did a much better job of handling those winds today than we did in our first event of the season."
The Zags are currently 16-over, after finishing 10-over (298) in the first round.
"We have ourselves in the middle of the pack at the moment and it was just the big numbers that kept us from being higher up on the leaderboard," Gray said. "It was easy to get a big number today with the winds pushing errant shots into unplayable or hard to find locations.
"I'm very proud of the guys for hanging in there for each other during those tough moments when they had a big score on a hole or a tough stretch of holes. When the wind is blowing like that and you get into a stretch of bad holes, it can be very hard to stay in it mentally. They did a great job of having a persevering attitude and battling back."
Munetake and Chris Mogg are both tied for 32nd at three-over. Mogg and Ruel were both tied for 18th, after carding rounds of 73 (+1) in Round 1. Mogg made five birdies and 27 pars through the first two rounds. He went two-under on the course's front-nine in the first round, and one-under on the front-nine in Round 2.
Munetake made six birdies in the first round, along with an eagle on Hole 15, and finished with a 75 (+3). With two holes left, the senior has made 10 pars and three birdies in the second round. Ruel had 11 pars and three birdies in his first round. He is three-over in Round 2, with one hole remaining.
Brentt Salas (T54th) and Nick Nolan (T78th) are six-over (150) and 10-over (154) entering Tuesday's final round. Salas carded a 73 (+1) in the second round with 12 pars and three birdies. Nolan was three-over (75) in Round 2, with four birdies.
UC Santa Barbara leads the team leaderboard at 14-under (562). UCSB's Zach Smith is tied with Bryan Wiyang Teoh of UCLA for first place on the individual leaderboard. Both golfers are six-under (138).
"We'll finish up a couple of holes from today then go right into our last round tomorrow," Gray said. "We're getting better each week and close to having really good rounds from the entire team. While we only use four scores for our team score, I'd really like to see all five players play great at the same time."
Golfers will finish the second round beginning Tuesday at 8 a.m. The third and final round will immediately follow Round 2. Live scoring will be available on GoZags.com.
