Zags in ninth place as a team at Nick Watney Invitational
MADERA, Calif. – Gonzaga's Chris Mogg is tied for 18th place following the first two rounds of the Nick Watney Invitational Monday. The Zags are ninth place at 12-over (588) as a team at the Dragonfly Golf Club.
Mogg carded a 69 (-3) and was tied for fifth after the first round, while GU was tied for second. The Bulldogs totaled a 284 (-4) in Round 1, and were tied for second.
Mogg's first round featured seven birdies and nine pars. He made four birdies and seven pars in the second round. His 11 birdies were tied for the third-most in the 69-golfer field. The junior was three-over (75) in Round 2, and is even-par (144) entering the final day.
Matthew Ruel was also tied for fifth at three-under (69) after the first round. He was seven-over (79) in Round 2, and is tied for 40th at four-over (148). The Oldsmar, Fla. native made five birdies and 11 pars in the first round, and 12 pars in the second round.
Nick Nolan is tied for 44th at five-over (149). He was even-par (72) in the first round and five-over (77) in Round 2. The junior was even-par on the course's Par-3 holes on the first day. He made 22 pars on Day 1, including 12 in the first round.
Grant Johnson (+7, 151) and Charlie Magruder (+8, 152) are tied for 52nd and 57th. Johnson's first day was highlighted by an eagle on Hole 6 during Round 1. Magruder's 28 pars are tied for the most in the tournament.
"A case of Jekyll and Hyde today," GU Head Coach Robert Gray said. "Very solid first round, followed by the complete opposite. The weather and course was lettuce much the same for both rounds. I believe our youth and trying to match our first round score, as most guys new where we stood, adding self-imposed tension played a big part in how we scored in the second round.
"While we had a bad second round, I'm proud of the team for fighting for every shot. That will benefit us as we get deeper into the season and in contention to finish on top of the leaderboard."
Nevada leads the team leaderboard at 24-under (552). The Wolf Pack were 12-under (276) in both the first and second rounds. BYU is in second at 13-under (563).
Three Nevada golfers sit in the top three, led by Joey Vrzich in first place. He is 12-under (132), with a four-stroke lead, entering the third and final round.
Round 3 begins with a shotgun start at 8:15 a.m. Tuesday. Live scoring is available on GoZags.com.
