SAN BRUNO, Calif. - The Gonzaga varsity four crew has been named the West Coast Conference Crew of the Month for the month of March, the conference office announced Thursday.
The crew of Ariel Evans, Ana Delucchi, Megan Seifert, Isabella Spies, and Amelie Tristant defeated No. 12 Washington State by 30 seconds with a time of 8:39.66 in Pullman, Washington on the Snake River at Wawawai Landing in the Fawley Cup Duel on March 25, their lone race of the month.
The conditions were mostly cloudy and 45 degrees, with an 8-9 mph quartering headwind and moderate to mild chop. The Bulldogs were ranked No. 18 in the nation entering the duel.
Prior to the warm up that day, those four rowers had only had one practice together as a crew. They fell behind early in the race, but fought back and pulled even by the 500 meter mark. They slowly and methodically pulled away to seal the victory.
"This has been a challenging winter and season for our team in many respects, and we are proud of how our team continues to overcome adversity and finds ways to continue their pursuit of their team goals," Gonzaga head coach Glenn Putyrae said. "The varsity four being acknowledged for their race in March hopefully is validation for our team that people recognize their success and value their accomplishments."
Last season, the GU varsity eight was the crew of the month in the month of March and the second varsity eight earned the honor for their performances in the month of April.
The Bulldogs are continuing to train for the Clemson Invitational on March 22, their final regatta before the 2017 West Coast Conference Championships on May 13.
