CHANDLER, Ariz. - David Ganz led the Gonzaga men's golf team with a two-over (218) finish at the Wyoming Cowboy Classic Tuesday. Ganz tied for 31st in the 111-golfer field.
Ganz was one-over (73) in the third and final round on the Cattail Course at the Whirlwind Golf Club. Starting on Hole 10 Tuesday, he was one-over after six holes, before making par on all of the final 12 holes. The junior made 38 pars in the tournament, four shy of the most in the field. He went two-under on the course's Par-3 holes, with an average of 2.83 on those holes.
"David posted our best round today and had one of his better finishes this spring," GU Head Coach Robert Gray said. "His game is starting to come around."
Ryan Gaske and Nick Nolan were seven-over (223) and nine-over (225). Gaske tied for 61st after a 77 (+5) in the final round. Nolan was four-over (76) in Round 3. The freshman closed the event going one-over on the front-nine, the final nine holes of the day. He made seven pars on the front-nine, along with a birdie.
"Nick is also hitting the ball better and can drop his scores quite a bit by cleaning up those little things that add up," Gray said. "Ryan is playing better than he's scoring. He made one decision on an approach shot that cost him three shots and had some putts he'd like to get a second chance at making."
Tyler Munetake tied for 100th at 26-over (242). He carded a 78 (+6) in the third round. The Wailuku, Hawaii native was two-under after the first nine holes Tuesday, with three birdies on the back-nine. Chris Mogg withdrew from the tournament in the final round.
"Chris tried his best to play today after falling ill but he just wasn't able to finish his round," Gray said.
UC Santa Barbara was 16-under (272) in Round 3. UCSB finished at 21-under (843), an 11-stroke lead over second-place Kansas. UC Santa Barbara's Zach Smith took medalist honors at 10-under (206). He edged out Aaron Beverly of Sacramento State by one stroke. Smith was five-under (67) in the final round.
Gonzaga finished in 17th place. The Zags were 37-over (901) in the tournament. GU was 16-over (304) in the final round.
"Our par 5 scoring hurt us yesterday," Gray said. "Today we played the par 5, 17th hole better, but struggled on the other three, playing them three-over par. We hit a lot of good shots but we're still leaving a lot of shots out there through sloppy mistakes. Attitudes were good again today. We're close to putting up some good scores.
"With the WCC Championship just a week away, we need to clean up those areas and be better with hitting fairways, as that sounds like it will be very important there," Gray said.
Gonzaga competes in the West Coast Conference Championships in Provo, Utah, on April 20-22. The tournament will be played at the Riverside Country Club. Live scoring will be available on GoZags.com.
