SPOKANE, Wash. - The Gonzaga Bulldogs, receiving votes in the latest USRowing/CRCA Poll released Tuesday, are hosting the Oregon State Beavers this Saturday at Silver Lake, just outside of Spokane. The Bulldogs will be racing their varsity eight, second varsity eight, third varsity eight, fourth varsity eights, and varsity four boats in the duel, getting underway with the varsity four race at 9:30 am. The Bulldogs will be dedicating their new shell at 8 am at the site, dedicating it to the seniors of the 2016 class, who recorded the best finish in school history, 16th at the NCAA Championships last year.
The Bulldogs are coming off the Fawley Cup against Washington State last weekend where they won three of the five races in Pullman. The varsity four, third varsity eight, and fourth varsity eight boats brought home wins for the Zags. The Beavers also opened up their spring season last weekend at the Longhorn Invitational in Austin, Tex. They finished fourth in the varsity eight and second varsity eight "B" finals, and second in the varsity four "B" final.
In Eugene, Ore. last season the Bulldogs swept all five races, including wins in the varsity eight, second varsity eight, third varsity eight, varsity four, and second varsity four races over the OSU boats. In 2015 at Silver Lake, the varsity eight took the lone victory for GU. The teams met in the 2014 Clemson Invitational, where GU was victorious in the varsity four race, and the 2014 duel saw GU win in the varsity four and second varsity four. The Bulldogs lone win in 2012 was in the second varsity four race and they took the second novice eight in 2011 at Silver Lake.
In 2010, Gonzaga once again claimed the varsity eight race in Eugene and the second novice eight race in 2009 at Liberty Lake, outside of Spokane. It was the Bulldogs who won the varsity eight and varsity four races in 2008 in Eugene.
The teams battled in the Pac-10 Championship from 2004 to 2009. GU's last victory over OSU in that setting was in the 2007 varsity four and novice eight grand finals at Lake Natoma in California. GU won the novice eight grand final in 2006, also at Lake Natoma.
