TUCSON, Ariz. -- The Gonzaga men's golf team completed their spring-opening tournament, the Arizona Intercollegiate, on the Sewailo Golf Course Tuesday.
The Zags finished in 18th place at 92-over (944). GU ended the second round with a 322 (+38) total, before having a 306 (+22) in the final round. Round 2 was called due to darkness Monday, but completed Tuesday morning.
"The wind was down today and the course was there for low scores," GU Head Coach Robert Gray said. "Unfortunately, we didn't improve much over yesterday."
David Ganz had an 81 (+10) in the second round, but responded with a 75 (+4) in the third and final round. He had 11 pars and two birdies in the third round. Ganz had eight birdies in the tournament. He finished the event at 17-over (230) in a tie for 53rd.
Ryan Gaske was tied for 70th. The senior had a 235 total (+22). He finished the second round with a 77 (+6) and the third round with an 80 (+9). Gaske went one-over on Par 3 holes, with an average of 3.08.
Nick Nolan had back-to-back rounds of 79 (+8) in the second and third rounds. The freshman was 26-over (239) in the tournament.
"I followed Nick all day and he was either on or off with different areas of his game," Gray said. "Each time he made a birdie it seemed the next hole was a series of unfortunate events. Despite that he kept a great competitive attitude the whole day, playing his final three holes one under par. He's a fighter and that's huge when your game is off."
Angus Montgomery was right behind in a tie for 82nd at 27-over (240). The senior had the team's lowest round of the tournament carding a 72 (+1) in Round 3. He had 10 pars and four birdies in the final round. He finished the second round at 14-over (85). Tyler Munetake placed 89th with a 271-total (+58).
Oregon won the tournament behind a medalist finish from Wyndham Clark. He held off Washington's Carl Yuan and Andre Garcia of New Mexico by a stroke. Clark had rounds of 70 (-1), 71 (E), and 68 (-3) to claim the individual title. Yuan was six-under (65) in the final round. The Ducks were 12 strokes ahead of second-place Pepperdine. No. 20 Oregon finished at five-over (857).
"Looking at this event, it was a mistake on my part to schedule this event so early back from semester break," Gray said. "I felt we'd be prepared with the four-week winter break because the team members homes are located where they can play during that time of year. However, this year's winter made it impossible for most of the team to properly prepare for the event, not to mention the difficult conditions under strong winds yesterday. In addition, those who were able to play didn't come back tournament ready.
"From here we'll begin preparing for our next event in a few weeks at the Classic Club in Palm Springs."
Gonzaga is at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate from Feb. 17-19. Live scoring will be available on GoZags.com.
