EUGENE, Ore. - Gonzaga freshman Bianca Pagdanganan saw a tough day Saturday during the second round of the NCAA Championships at Eugene Country Club in Eugene, Ore.
Pagdanganan posted a double bogey on her first hole of the day, the par-4 10th, but parred the next couple holes. Two more pars followed a bogey and a double bogey. After a birdie on the par-5 17th - her second of the tournament on the hole - she ended her first nine with a double bogey, playing the back half of the course at 6-over-par 41.
The Quezon City, Philippines, native, played Eugene C.C.'s first three holes at 1-over, but another bogey-double stretch put her at 10-over on the day. Pagdanganan countered with a birdie on No. 6, a 374-yard par-4, and parred out the rest of the round, playing Saturday's final four holes at 1-under. In all, she counted 81 strokes (+9).
"Tough day for Bianca," said Gonzaga head coach Brad Rickel. "She didn't hit the fairways today and the Championship is set up with long, thick rough. It was just too tough to overcome. She battled hard, but we found ourselves in too many bad places off the tee to score. We look forward to tomorrow's round and another chance to play this course."
Pagdanganan is tied for 125th with a two-day total of 157 (+13). Miami's Dewi Weber holds the individual lead at 9-under-par 135 while second-ranked Southern California leads the team tournament with 569 strokes (-7).
In all, 24 teams and 132 players are competing in Eugene this weekend. After the first three rounds of stroke play, the top 15 teams and top nine individuals not on an advancing team will earn a spot in the fourth and final round of stroke play. The individual national champion will be crowned after the fourth round of stroke play, and the top eight teams will move on to match play to determine the team champion.
Pagdanganan will begin the third round of the NCAA Championships at 12:55 p.m. off the No. 10 tee on Sunday, May 22, again at Eugene Country Club.
