LAHAINA, Hawaii -- The Gonzaga men's golf team is 11 strokes off of the lead in eighth place after the first round of the Ka'anapali Classic Collegiate Invitational Friday.
The Zags were nine-over in Round 1, with a 293 total. Six of the seven teams ahead of GU are ranked, including No. 7 Oklahoma at six-over in seventh. South Carolina tops the team leaderboard at two-under (282).
Angus Montgomery led the Bulldogs over the first 18 holes of the three-day tournament. He was even-par (71) with five birdies. The senior is tied for 14th on the individual leaderboard.
Ryan Gaske and David Ganz are both tied for 20th at one-over (72). Ganz had four birdies, while Gaske had three. Gaske added 11 pars.
Nick Nolan and Ben DuBois both finished the first round at 78 (+7). They both sit in a tie for 93rd.
Clemson's Doc Redman and Keenan Huskey of South Carolina are tied for the lead. Both carded rounds of 66 (-5).
"Tough conditions today with swirling, gusty winds to 30 miles per hour," GU Head Coach Robert Gray said. "We had solid rounds from Angus, Ryan and David today. Nick scored well on 14 of the holes, but two bogies on Par 5's, along with a double and triple, was the difference in him posting a good score. Ben got off to a terrible start, but found a rhythm and played his final 10 holes even par.
Overall, a good start for us. We had ourselves in the lead last week and didn't handle it well. However, we'll try to use that experience to help us tomorrow."
Gonzaga begins the second round at 11:30 a.m. Pacific Time Saturday. Live scoring will be available on GoZags.com.
