SAN BRUNO, Calif. -- Gonzaga women's cross country runners, Jessica Mildes and Jordan Thurston, were both named Academic All-West Coast Conference Thursday.
Mildes and Thurston were selected to the All-Academic team, while Katy Culver and Julie Henling were tabbed honorable mention. Ian Goldizen and Jerry Sicalo were in the men's honorable mention list.
Mildes makes her second consecutive appearance on the first team this season. All told, 35 nominated women's cross country student-athletes posted a GPA of 3.50 or better, 25 of which recorded a mark of 3.75 or higher. An unprecedented five WCC student-athletes posted a perfect 4.00 GPA, including Mildes.
Mildes, an accounting major, started the season with an 11th place finish at the Clash of the Inland Northwest, followed by fifth place finish at Montana Invitational. She placed 40th at the Pre-Nationals.
Thurston boasts a 3.97 GPA in accounting. She won the first three races of the season and came in sixth at the Pre-Nationals in Indiana. She started the season by breaking the program 4,000-meter course record at the Clash of the Inland Northwest. Thurston was honorable mention Academic All-WCC last year.
Henling was Academic All-Conference last season, and has a 3.97 GPA this year. The English major, opened the season with three top-20 finishes, and ran a 23:13.4 at the Pre-Nationals in Indiana. Culver, an economics major, has 3.45 GPA. She placed 11th at the Gonzaga-Idaho Dual and 10th at the Montana Invitational.
On the men's side, Goldizen has a 3.46 GPA as a business administration major. He placed eighth at the Inland Empire Championships with a time of 24:48, and 14th at the Montana Invitational. At the conclusion of each athletic season, the WCC selects an all-academic squad for each WCC-sponsored sport. To be considered, a student-athlete must maintain at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average, while also being a significant contributor to her team.
The GU women and men are at the West Coast Conference Championships in San Diego, Calif. The women's race begins at 10 a.m., followed by the men's race at 11. Live video and results will be available on GoZags.com.
