ABOUT THE EVENT:
- This is the sixth consecutive year the Zags have played at the Husky Invitational.
- The tournament typically brings in schools from all over the western United States and this year is no exception. Gonzaga will square off against PAC-12 schools, as well as WCC opponent BYU.
ABOUT THE COURSE:
- Designed by Tom Doak, the Tumble Creek golf course opened in 2005.
- The Tumble Creek Golf Course was named one of the top private courses in America by Golf Digest.
- The course features wide fairways with no rough, waste areas outside the short grass, and large, quick undulated greens that present interesting pin locations.
NOT A BAD WAY TO START:
- Sean Walsh became the first Gonzaga men's golfer to win an individual tournament title in eight years Wednesday at the Saint Mary's Invitational.
- Brandon Crick was the last GU individual win in 2007 when he won the Angel Park Shootout in Las Vegas.
- It was the fifth individual title in program history.
AN UNREAL ROUND:
- Walsh carded a third and final round of 66 (-5), matching the lowest-round of the tournament.
- His score was one stroke off of the competitive course record on the Poppy Hills Golf Course.
- It was also one stroke shy of his own program record.
- His final total of 208 (-5) was one stroke from the 54-hole GU record, which he and Crick both own at 207.
- He played a bogey-free round, making five birdies with 13 pars. His 14 birdies were the most in the 84-golfer field. The Keller, Texas native made 33 pars, which was the eighth-highest total in the field.
- Walsh led the tournament on the course's nine par-four holes. He was two-under on those holes, with an average of 3.93.
PRESEASON EXPECTATIONS:
- Sean Walsh was named to the 2015 preseason All-West Coast Conference team.
- Walsh enters his senior season after a stellar summer which recently ended with his third straight appearance in the U.S. Amateur Championship.
- This is the second straight preseason All-WCC honor for Walsh.
- Walsh was named All-WCC honorable mention for the second straight season in 2015.
- He finished tied for 10th at the 2015 WCC Championships, and 11th in 2014.
- Walsh was named All-WCC in 2013, after being named the Conference Freshman of the Year with a third place finish at the conference championships.
