SAN BRUNO, Calif. - Gonzaga's Laura Brasch and Casey Burt were named to the West Coast Conference Women's Rowing All-Academic Team, league officials announced on Thursday. Five other Zag rowers earned honorable mention honors.
Joining Brasch and Burt in being recognized for their combination of academic and athletic achievement were Devyn Bell, Shaylee Keiffer, Ingrid Stansberry, Maddie Turbes and Madeleine Verspieren. Those five were named to the WCC Women's Rowing Academic Honorable Mention squad.
Brasch, a senior Sport Management major, carries a 3.78 grade-point average and is the coxswain of the Varsity 4+ boat. This season, she has helped lead the V4+ team to a win over UC Davis in a head to head dual and helped the team achieve the highest ranking in school history at No. 19. The Varsity 4+ boat also has a pair of third-place finishes at the Lake Natoma Invitational and a fourth-place finish in a seven-boat race at the Clemson Invitational.
Burt, a senior Mechanical Engineering, major, carries a 3.61 grade-point average and competes on the Varsity 8+ boat. This season, she has helped Gonzaga achiev the highest national ranking in school history, checking in at No. 19 in the latest CRCA poll. The V8+ boat has earned a pair of second-place finishes behind top-five teams in No. 2 Brown and No. 3 Cal on the first day of the Lake Natoma Invitational and claimed victory (6:37.8) on the second day over Notre Dame (6:44.0) and WCC rival San Diego (6:46.2). Facing more of the nation's best at the Clemson Invitational, GU's Varsity 8+ posted second and third-place finishes in two races on the first day, featuring faster times than No. 16 UCLA and No. 20 Minnesota in its afternoon session. The crew also defeated Oregon State and UC Davis in head-to-head duals earlier this spring.
Gonzaga will head to the WCC Championships in Gold River, Calif., this weekend. Races begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday morning. The conference champion will earn a berth into the NCAA Championships.
