BOULDER CITY, Nev.--The Gonzaga University women's golf team continued play at the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown Monday, shooting its third under-par round in team history at Boulder Creek Golf Club in Boulder City, Nev.
As a team, the Zags counted 287 strokes during the second round, one stroke below par. It's the first below-par round for Gonzaga of the season and the program's third overall. They also shot 1-under during a round at the 2013 Challenge at Onion Creek and 2014 Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational. The 287 combined with Sunday's 290 gives Gonzaga a two-round total of 577 strokes, one stroke above par. It's the second-lowest score through two rounds in school history and lowest through two rounds in relation to par. Despite the low tally, the Bulldogs are 18th in the team standings.
Freshman Jena Gao posted Gonzaga's round under par, shooting 71 (-1) on the day, while the four other Bulldogs each shot even-par 72. After round two, senior Raychelle Santos still is the top Bulldog with 143 strokes, one below par, and she's now played five career tournament rounds at Boulder Creek Golf Club, shooting par or better in each one. Santos is tied for 44th on the individual leaderboard.
Three Zags are within three strokes of Santos. Junior Ciera Min turned in her second consecutive round at even par for a two-round total of 144 (E). She now has four rounds of par or better on the year and is tied with freshman Bianca Pagdanganan atop the category. Pagdanganan, meanwhile, also shot 72 Monday to remain one stroke behind Min at 145 (+1). Min is tied for 54th in the tournament while Pagdanganan is six spots back in a tie for 60th.
Sophomore Dania Uy scrambled to save par on the round, starting the day with consecutive bogeys but playing the rest at two under. Uy is directly behind her fellow underclassman with 146 strokes (+2) and in a tie for 71st.
Gao, meanwhile, used the Bulldogs' lone round under par to climb six spots up the leaderboard into a tie for 97th. She cut 10 strokes off her first round tally and has a two-day total of 152, eight strokes above par.
"We had a great round going today but gave it all back on the last five holes. It was a disappointing finish," said Gonzaga head coach Brad Rickel. "Jena played a good solid, round today, and it was a nice rebound from yesterday. Everyone else had it under par for most of the day. Dania didn't play her best but ground out a good score; I'm proud of how she fought. We have to figure out how to go low on this course if we want to move up tomorrow."
San Jose State leads the team competition with 550 strokes (-26) after back-to-back rounds of 275 (-13), and the Spartans' My Leander tops the individual leaderboard with 132 strokes, 12 shots below par.
The Bulldogs will look to go even lower during the final round of the Las Vegas Collegiate Invite on Tuesday, Oct. 27. That round, their final loop of the fall season, will begin with an 8:00 a.m. shotgun, again at Boulder Creek Golf Club.
