Zags Hit the Water on the Pend Oreille River
PRIEST RIVER, Idaho—The Gonzaga University women's rowing program hit the water in its first regatta of the season Saturday, taking part in the fourth annual Head of the Pend Oreille on the Pend Oreille River in Priest River, Idaho.
"We thought the crews did well and we were able to learn some things about our team," said Gonzaga women's rowing head coach Glenn Putyrae. "We are encouraged about the progress we are making as a team and are looking forward to the next few months of training."
Two Gonzaga crews competed in the 8+ race of the regatta with the Bulldog 8 taking home a victory. The Bulldog 8 crew completed the course in 19:17, 12 seconds faster than WSU's 8+. Gonzaga's second 8 in the race, the Zag 8, followed close behind with a time of 19:33.
The Zags' lone entrant in the 4+ race took second with a time of 20:59. WSU's A crew won with a time of 20:23 while the Cougars' B boat finished a distant third at 22:15.
In the Pairs race, Gonzaga's duo of Maddie Turbes and Devyn Bell finished fifth behind four WSU boats.
The Head of the Pend Oreille, the only rowing regatta in the state of Idaho, is an event created to expose the local communities of Priest River and Sandpoint, Idaho, to the sport of rowing.
"The Priest River community and the Head of the Pend Oreille Regatta Committee put on a great event," said Putyrae. "It is a great contribution to the growth of our sport in the inland northwest."
The Zags will have nearly a month to continue training before their next regatta. That regatta, the Head of the Spokane, will take place Saturday, Oct. 25, on the Spokane River in Spokane, Wash.
