Palo Alto, Calif.—Running into its third ranked team of the season, the Gonzaga University men's soccer team fell 3-0 to No. 19 Stanford Friday night at Cagan Stadium in Palo Alto, Calif.
"The guys battled hard for most of the game," said Gonzaga head coach Einar Thorarinsson. "Giving up a goal in the 31st minute set us back. We're trying to overcome a couple of injuries right now."
The Zags' offense was stymied by a stingy Cardinal defense. Gonzaga took three shots in the match, all three in the second half. Two of those attempts - one shot each from Zach Hamer and Lars Ludwigs - were on frame, but Stanford keeper Andrew Epstein made both saves to keep the Zags scoreless.
Gonzaga keeper Chris Lowrimore made four saves himself during the match, marking the second straight contest he saved four shots on goal. The redshirt junior has made at least four saves in each match of the season.
The Cardinal offense scored three times Friday night. Jordan Morris opened the scoresheet in the 31st minute by heading home his second goal of the season. Tomas Hilliard-Arce put the home side up by two in the 48th minute, and Foster Langsdorf closed the scoresheet in the 68th minute.
Stanford (6-1-0), ranked No. 19 in the latest NSCAA rankings, is the third ranked squad that Gonzaga has faced this season. Washington and California were also among the nation's 25 best squads when they squared off against the Zags.
Gonzaga (1-5-0) continues its road trip by flying to Seattle to face Seattle U on Sunday, Sept. 28. The match against the Redhawks will begin at 3:00 p.m. at Championship Field.
