SAN BRUNO, Calif.—After a four-point showing in the Zags' first win of the season, forward Conner Bevans has been named West Coast Conference Men's Soccer Player of the Week.
Bevans, a junior from La Habra Heights, Calif., was involved in three of the four goals during Gonzaga's 4-2 victory over UNLV on Sept. 20. He tallied assists on the Zags' second and third goals of the match, providing perfect passes to both scoring players, and then found a scoring touch himself on the squad's fourth.
"Saturday was one of Conner's better games since joining our team," said Gonzaga men's soccer head coach Einar Thorarinsson. "He was opportunistic and took advantage of what the defense gave him. He was big for us as he was a part of three of our four goals."
On his first assist, Bevans played a deep ball from past midfield to up to Jakob Granlund, who got around a UNLV defender and finished it off for a 2-0 lead in the 37th minute. Bevans' second assist was a pin-point cross across the goal mouth to Zach Hamer, who put the ball in from 12 yards out for the Zags' winning goal.
In the match's final minute, Bevans netted a score of his own by dribbling up from near midfield, dodging the UNLV defense, and finishing it past the keeper. The California native could have had one more as well, as in the 54th minute he bounced consecutive shots off the left and right posts.
This is Bevan's first conference player of the week honor of his career and the Zags' first WCC award of the year. He and the rest of the squad will continue their non-conference slate with matches at Stanford and Seattle U this weekend.
EDIT 9/23: The awards continue to roll in for Bevans as he was also selected as CollegeSportsMadness.com's WCC Men's Soccer Player of the Week. This is also the Zags' first award of the year from College Sports Madness.
