Zags Win Two Petite Finals At San Diego Crew Classic

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The Gonzaga University women's rowing squad closed out the San Diego Crew Classic winning two Petite Finals Sunday. The Bulldogs, participating in the prestigious San Diego Crew Classic for the first time since 2012, won both the Varsity 8+ Petite Final and the Second Varsity 8+ Petite Final.
Gonzaga's Varsity 4+ boats also had strong showings, as the Varsity 4+ A placed second in its Petite Final and the Zag Varsity 4+ B boat claimed second in their ‘Final only' race.
"We were pleased with how all our crews performed today," stated Gonzaga head coach Glenn Putyrae about is squads overall performance. "While we aren't where we expect to be yet, we found out this weekend that we are closer to the top then we've ever been. All of the athletes are excited to get back to work and prepare for the Clemson Invitational."
The Bulldog Varsity 8+ easily won their Petite Final, closing out the 2,000-meter course in a time of 6:51.40, eight seconds ahead of second-place Miami. Overall, Gonzaga took seventh at the classic but had the fifth fastest time in both Varsity 8+ finals combined Sunday. USC won the Grand Final of the Varsity 8+ with a finish of 6:38.61.
Gonzaga's Second Varsity 8+ had the Zags fastest time of the day, winning its Petite Final in 6:50.13. The University of Iowa placed second in the Petite Final at 6:53.38. The Bulldogs also finished seventh overall in its group but had the quickest finish of all 12 Second Varsity 8+ boats. The University of California won the Second Varsity 8+ Grand Final in 6:51.36.
The Varsity 4+ Petite Final was a battle and Texas Austin won the race over Gonzaga by a mere .22. Austin Texas earned the win in 7:40.64, followed by the Zags at 7:40.86. USC won the Grand Final of the Varsity 4+ race at 7:36.92 and the Bulldogs earned eighth place overall.
In the Varsity 4+ B ‘Final Only' race, Gonzaga was beaten to the finish line by USC who crossed in 8:02.2. The Bulldogs claimed second in 8:05.43.
Gonzaga returns to Spokane to prepare for the Clemson Invitational set for April 19-20 in Clemson, S.C.
