Petite Finals Await Zags Sunday At San Diego Crew Classic

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Excited for its first regatta in two weeks, the Gonzaga University women's rowing team participated in the San Diego Crew Classic Saturday, earning a third place, fourth place and fifth place finish in its three respective heat races. All three Zag boats will now take part in Petite Finals Sunday.
The Bulldog Second Varsity 8+ had the best finish of the day for Gonzaga, placing third in its heat with a time of 6:50.445. The University of California won the Second Varsity 8+ heat, crossing the finish line in 6:41.875.
The Second Varsity 8+ Petite Final - in which the Zags will battle for the win - is set for Sunday at 8:30 a.m.
Gonzaga's marquee Varsity 8+ had the fastest Zag time of day, closing out its heat race at 6:40.316 for a fourth-place finish. The University of Washington claimed the victory at 6:29.693, while UCLA placed second at 6:33.365.
The Varsity 8+ Petite Final is Sunday at 9:30 a.m.
In the Zags final race on Saturday, the Varsity 4+ earned a fifth place finish, closing out the 2,000-meter course on Mission Bay in 7:40. 571. USC was the winning boat in the Bulldogs heat at 7:25.777, with UCLA again in second at 7:29.908.
Gonzaga's Varsity 4+ will partake in the Petite Final Sunday at 8:50 a.m.
"All the crews felt like they had solid races, felt like what they did on the race course was comparable to what they have been doing in practice," explained Gonzaga head coach Glenn Putyrae after the opening day of the regatta. "So no real surprises today, about what we expected. That being said, it is always good to know what you have to do and feel confident to do it. It is a great opportunity to hopefully perform better tomorrow than we did today; we always want to keep moving forward."
Also racing Saturday was the Gonzaga Alumni. It was the first time in school history an alumni boat raced in the prestigious event. The Bulldog Alumni took third at 7:47.929.
Gonzaga's Varsity 4+ B will race in a ‘Final Only' Sunday at 11:40 a.m.
