Solid Start For Women's Rowing At Clemson Invitational

CLEMSON, S.C. - The Gonzaga University women's rowing team placed second in two races and third in another on the opening day of the highly competitive Clemson Invitational held on Lake Hartwell Saturday. The invite was scheduled to have addition racing Saturday but poor conditions on the lake forced the evening session to be postponed.
Despite not being able to get on the water a second time Saturday, Gonzaga head coach Glenn Putyrae was happy with his teams opening performance and looks forward to a full day of racing Sunday.
"The racing got off to a solid start," stated Putyrae. "All our crews felt they had solid pieces. They are excited to get back on the course tomorrow morning and continue improving."
Putyrae was also understanding of decision to postpone Saturday's second session.
"The weather this evening was not good so the decision was made to postpone racing and complete racing tomorrow in less challenging conditions."
The Bulldogs' Varsity 8+ and Varsity 4+ each earned a second place finish in their respective races in less than ideal weather in the morning session.
The Zag Varsity 8+ crossed the finish line in 7:11.0, only behind Oregon State University who claimed the winning time of 7:08.4. Eighteenth-ranked Clemson rounded out the top three in 7:17.1.
Gonzaga's Varsity 4+ finished its 2,000-meter race in 8:52.4; one of only two to finish in less than nine minutes. Host Clemson won the race at 8:40.3.
The Bulldogs Second Varsity 8+battled with Oregon State for second place, but fell behind the Beavers and earned third place with a finish of 7:31.6. OSU took second at 7:30.5, while Clemson earned the victory in 7:26.9.
Gonzaga will return to action beginning at 7:45 a.m. ET Sunday morning after the race schedule was altered after Saturday evening's postponement.
