LAS VEGAS, Nev.—The Gonzaga University women's golf team ended the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown on a high note Tuesday, firing its best round of the tournament held at Boulder Creek Golf Club in Las Vegas, Nev.
As a team, the Zags counted 289 strokes (+1) during Tuesday's final round, their lowest score of the tournament. With the low score, they moved into sole possession of seventh place with three-day total of 883, 19 strokes above par and just one stroke shy of sixth.
"We battled a bad start today, but our last nine holes were the best nine of the tournament for us," said Gonzaga women's golf head coach Brad Rickel. "Overall, it wasn't quite the finish we were hoping for coming into the tournament."
Two Zags finished in the top 10 as both Ciera Min and Raychelle Santos tied for eighth with a tournament score of even-par 216. Min shot a 1-under par 71 Tuesday, the Zags' lowest individual round of the tournament, to reach the mark while Santos turned in her third straight score of 72 (E). The top 10 finishes are both Min's and Santos' second of the season as they both were among the top 10 finishers at the Ptarmigan Ram Classic in September.
Also shooting even-par 72 Tuesday, Alice Kim saw her best round of the tournament to move into a tie for 41st. She ended the competition with 224 strokes, eight shots above par.
Dania Uy bounced back from a tough second round to fire 74 (+2) during the tournament finale. The freshman ended in a tie for 62nd with a tournament score of 227 (+11).
Rounding out the Bulldogs' lineup, Angela De Villa also carded her best round of the tournament, shooting a final round 76 (+4). She finished the competition with a score of 237, 21 strokes above par.
"Ciera and Raychelle were our best and they did all they could this week. Alice had a nice day today, and Dania was really close to a great round as well," Rickel said.
San Diego State and Minnesota tied for the team lead at 1-under-par 863 with Minnesota shooting 10 under par on the day to force the tie. There was also a big comeback in the individual competition as host school UNLV's Dana Finkelstein shot seven under Tuesday to win medalist honors by three strokes at 9-under-par 207.
With the conclusion of the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown, the Zags have wrapped up their fall slate of tournaments. They will now focus on ending the fall semester strong academically, celebrating the upcoming holidays, and preparing their games for the spring schedule. That spring slate begins mid-February at the Peg Barnard Invitational in Stanford, Calif.
