LAS VEGAS, Nev.—The Gonzaga University women's golf team began its final tournament of the fall season Sunday, playing the first round of the three-day Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown at Boulder Creek Golf Club.
"We had a good day today, but not a great day," said Gonzaga women's golf head coach Brad Rickel. "The wind blew the entire round, making parts of the golf course very difficult. We know we will have to improve tomorrow if we want to move up. We have played the course once now so we will be looking to go lower."
Raychelle Santos once again leads the Zags and is tied for 11th after Sunday's first round. The junior from La Quinta, Calif., carded an even-par 72 to open the tournament.
Two Zags are one stroke behind Santos as both Ciera Min and Dania Uy turned in scores of 1-over-par 73. They're tied 12 other players for a share of 16th.
Next up, Alice Kim is tied for 50th with a first-round score of 76, four strokes over par. The senior is one stroke ahead of Angela De Villa, who rounds out the Zags' lineup at 5-over-par 77. She's tied for 58th.
As a team, the Zags are tied for fourth place with a collective total of 294 strokes, six above par. They're even with both Indiana and Long Beach State. San Diego State has the early team lead at 281 strokes, seven shots under par. All seven of those strokes under par came from Haleigh Krause, who's in first place by two strokes at 7-under 65.
The Zags begin the second round of the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown at 8:24 a.m. when De Villa takes the first tee, again at Boulder Creek Golf Club.
