SPOKANE, Wash. - Franziska Koehler won her No. 6 singles match but Gonzaga University fell to 45th-ranked University of San Diego 6-1 at the Spokane Racquet Club Friday. Koehler defeated Mikayla Morkel-Brink 7-5, 3-2 (retired to injury) for the lone Bulldog point.
The loss ends the Bulldogs three match winning streak and puts the team at 9-5 overall and 0-3 in the West Coast Conference. San Diego wins its first WCC match and moves to 6-6.
"I really thought we competed well today," head coach D.J. Gurule said. "The final score does not reflect how competitive the match really was. I am happy how we played all day against one of the better programs in the nation."
Katie Edwards battled in her No. 1 singled match over Laura Claus. Edwards went down in three sets 6-7, 6-2, 6-1. Isabell Klingert also narrowly fell in her No. 3 singles match. Klingert dropped to Shani Blecher 7-6, 7-6.
The Zags did not win the doubles point but did come out on top of the No. 2 doubles match. Samantha Polayes and Melanie Yates took down Stephanie Hoffpauir and Anna Depenau 9-7.
Polayes and Yates are 7-3 as a duo.
The Zags have some time off before their next match. Visiting April 3 will be the University of Montana for a 3 p.m. tilt.
