SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - Gonzaga University's men's golf team posted its best round of the 54-hole ninth annual Wyoming Classic at Talking Stick Golf Club, North Course on Tuesday, but so did most everyone else.
The Bulldogs, who self destructed with penalty strokes and three putts in Monday's 36 holes, shot a 291 Tuesday as freshman Peter Gullickson led the way with a 68 for a 54-hole score of 221 and a tie for 23rd. That gave the Bulldogs a 54-hole score of 889, one shot behind fellow West Coast Conference foe Santa Clara University which shot a final round 288 to overtake the Bulldogs.
Travis Johnsen, who with Gullickson turned in one solid round Monday, fired a 72 Tuesday for a 54-hole score of 221 over the 7,133-yard, par 70 layout.
"Peter posted a solid round today to improve his position and post a good finish this week. It was great to see him rebound after his putting troubles the first round and play his final 36 holes at 2-under," Gonzaga head coach Robert Gray said. "Travis finished off all his rounds very well, playing two of them at 2-under for his final four holes. That's been an issue with the team in the past so it's great to see him come through down the stretch for the team."
Gray said Tuesday was a great improvement and more competitive with the rest of the field.
"Our team score was more in line with the field today but, unfortunately, our fourth score hurt us today. It was good to see us improve over yesterday and post our best team round of the week, but we need to work on the things that hurt us this week so we can be competitive at our next event."
Baylor University finished at 836 for a 3-stroke victory over the University of Arizona. Tarquin Macmanus of Arizona shot a final-round 66 for a 1-shot victory over Zahkai Brown of Colorado State University and Joakim Mikkelsen of Baylor. Brown was the clubhouse leader Monday.
Gonzaga's next action will be in the Braveheart Classic in Riverside, Calif., next Monday and Tuesday.
