Women's Soccer Earns NSCAA Team Academic Award

SPOKANE, Wash. - The Gonzaga University women's soccer team has been honored by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) for its success in the classroom earning the 2011 NSCAA College Team Academic Award. The award requires a team GPA of 3.0 or higher for the 2010-11 academic year.
The Bulldogs, who hold a 3.48 grade point average, finished in the top 30 in the country among NCAA Division I schools. In addition, the Zags were one of seven West Coast Conference schools to earn the honor and had the second highest GPA of the WCC institutions. The University of Portland had the highest cumulative GPA in the WCC, posting 3.49.
A total of 790 soccer teams were honored, including 571 women's soccer programs. Gonzaga was also one of 159 schools to have both the men's and women's program honored as the men's program posted a 3.27 GPA.
"We hold ourselves to a high standard in the classroom and this award confirms the dedication of every individual on our squad," stated third year head coach Amy Edwards, whose team just closed out first semester finals.
Earlier this season five Bulldogs were named to the 2011 West Coast Conference Women's Soccer All-Academic team. Sophomore Emily Eckmann was named to the first team, while junior Emma Dolcetti, junior Morgan Manchester, senior Caitlyn Salo and senior Katie Spangenberg all earned honorable mention accolades.
