NOTRE DAME, Ind. - Gonzaga University's men's golf team was unable to move up the leaderboard in Tuesday's final round of the Fighting Irish Grid Iron Classic hosted by the University of Notre Dame, the Bulldogs finishing 13th at 898.
The Bulldogs did get a couple of solid rounds from freshman Peter Gullickson and senior Kyle Huus. Gullickson shot an even-par 70 over the 7,023-yard, par 70 Warren Golf Course for the best GU round of the 54-hole tournament, and Huus shot 73. Gullickson finished tied for 12th overall at 215 after rounds of 71-74 Monday, while Huus tied for 31st at 222 with rounds of 77-72 to go with Tuesday's 73. The Bulldogs shot a final-round 302.
The University of Iowa, ranked 15th in the latest Golfstat rankings, picked up a 6-stroke victory over the 41st-ranked Fighting Irish with an 853. University of San Francisco teammates Taylor Travis and Ji Hwan Park tied for medalist honors at 208, helping the 32nd-ranked Dons finish third.
"Going into today, the guys knew they needed to play well to move up the board. We need to get solid results from everyone to keep from slipping the final day," Gonzaga head coach Robert Gray said. "This was a great learning experience for us on how to handle the extra pressure of playing our best when we have to."
Gray said Gullickson and Huus played "played well on a tough day while the others struggled. We just didn't get it done today. Kyle is always steady and it's great to see Peter adjusting so well."
The schedule doesn't get any easier for the Bulldogs, who head to the Brickyard College Championship Oct. 8-10 in Macon, Ga.
"Next week we head to our strongest event of the year. We're going to need our absolute best from everyone. After three straight events, it will be nice to be at home for a week to work on the individual areas that need improvement," Gray said of the demanding schedule his squad has faced this season.
There were five Top 50 teams included in this week's field.
