PULLMAN, Wash. - Gonzaga University sophomore Victoria Fallgren holds a 3-stroke lead and the Bulldogs are just three shots off the team lead heading into Wednesday's final round of the WSU Cougar Cup hosted by Washington State University at Palouse Ridge Golf Club.
Fallgren shot a second-round 71 Tuesday over the 6,278-yard par 72 layout for a 36-hole score of 145 and a 3-stroke lead over Teo Poplawski of the University of Idaho.
The Bulldogs, who were fourth heading into Tuesday's round after an opening-day 316, improved by 15 shots Tuesday as the weather improved and golfers took advantage of the better conditions. Gonzaga is at 617 following Tuesday's 301 and trails host WSU by three shots and is also three shots ahead of the University of Washington and the University of Montana who are tied for third.
Gonzaga's Jessica Howe is tied for 21st after a second-round 78 for a two-day total of 158, Genna Dodge rallied from an opening-day 84 to post a 76 Tuesday and is tied for 28th at 160 and freshman TJ Kliebphipat had a 76 and is at 161 and tied for 33rd. Stephanie Corey had a rough day with an 84 and is at 182 and tied for 37th.
"It was better weather, but the pins were tough today," Gonzaga head coach Brad Rickel said. "I'm proud of our team. We think we can putt better, but we gave great effort."
Rickel said Fallgren's game has been "very solid. She has hit her driver well and has played the golf course smart. It will be fun to be in the final groupings tomorrow."
