Fallgren Holds First-Round Lead; Bulldogs Three Strokes Out

PULLMAN, Wash. - Gonzaga University's Victoria Fallgren overcame the elements and holds the opening-round lead at the WSU Cougar Cup hosted by Washington State University at Palouse Ridge Golf Club.
Fallgren shot a first-round round 74 Monday over the 6,278-yard, par 72 layout and holds a 1-stroke lead over four others.
The 54-hole tournament continues with the second round Tuesday and wraps up with Wednesday's final 18 holes.
Rain and high winds made conditions less than ideal, but the Bulldogs as a team also battled the conditions and find themselves in fourth place after a 316 and just three shots off the lead held by the University of Montana. The host Cougars are second at 314 and the University of Idaho is third at 315.
Bulldog junior Stephanie Corey is in a five-way tie for eighth after an opening-round 78, Fallgren and Corey the only two Bulldogs on the designated roster to break 80. Gonzaga's Sage Suffecool, playing as an individual, shot 79.
"The team held together on a very difficult day," Gonzaga head coach Brad Rickel said. "It was brutal weather with the rain, the cold and the wind, which makes Victoria's round all the more impressive."
Tuesday's forecast calls for partly cloudy skies with a high of 65 and winds less than 10 mph, quite a contrast from Monday's winds of 15 mph and gusting higher.
