Fallgren, Dodge Need Strong Rounds Tuesday To Advance

NOTRE DAME, Ind. - Gonzaga University golfers Victoria Fallgren and Genavive "Genna" Dodge find themselves in a precarious position heading into Tuesday's final 18 holes of stroke play at the U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links Championship at The Warren Course at Notre Dame on the University of Notre Dame campus.

With only the top 64 golfers from the field of 156 qualifying for the start of Wednesday's match play after the 36 holes of stroke play, Fallgren finds herself tied for 80th after a 6-over par 77 while Dodge is tied for 130th after an 11-over par 82 after Monday's opening 18 holes.

Past U.S. Women's' Amateur champion Kimberly Kim of Pahoa, Hawai'i, fired a 5-under-par 66 to lead the first round of stroke-play qualifying over the 6,092-yard, par-71 layout.

Kim, who in 2006 at the age of 14 became the youngest Women's Amateur winner in history, has a one-stroke lead over her 2010 USA Curtis Cup teammate, Stephanie Kono of Honolulu, and Lizette Salas of Azusa, Calif.

Fallgren, from Lakewood, Calif., was 2-over par after nine holes that included her lone birdie of the round on the par 5, 512-yard fifth hole. But she had four of her seven bogeys for the round on the back nine. She had 10 pars.

Dodge, from Post Falls, Idaho, got off to a rough start, going 8-over par on the front nine, but she settled down to play 3-over par golf on the back nine. Her round included three double bogeys, six bogeys, eight pars and a birdie on the 353-yard, par 4 15th hole.

Fallgren will tee off at 4:40 a.m. Pacific Time Tuesday and be paired with Kelly Fuchik of Tulsa, Okla., and Ashley Smith of Plymouth, Mich. Fuchik is tied for 32nd after an opening-round 73 while Smith is tied for 100th after a 79. Dodge will tee off at 6:30 a.m. Pacific time and play with Emilie Burger of Hoschton, Geo., and Samantha Morrell of North Kingston, R.I. Morrell is tied for 22nd after an opening-round 72 and Burger is tied for 80th after a 77 Monday.

Eleven players broke par for Monday's round, which was suspended for 90 minutes due to weather. Two of the three leaders, Kim and Kono, finished in the mid-evening but took advantage of rain-softened greens.
