TULSA, Okla. - Senior Layne Brosky tallied 17 kills but it wasn't enough as the Gonzaga University women's volleyball team dropped a 3-1 (26-28, 19-25, 25-17, 17-25) decision to Texas Tech University in the opening match of the Radisson Tulsa Airport Invitational Friday. The Bulldogs, playing in their final in-season tournament of the year, fell to 2-5 on the season, while the Red Raiders improved their overall mark to 2-5.
In the crucial opening set, Gonzaga led early, taking a 16-12 advantage after a kill by senior Michelle Beovers. Texas Tech slowly chipped away at the Zags lead though and tied the set at 20 a piece after GU allowed three straight kills by the Red Raiders. The set went back and forth, with ties at 22, 23, 25 and 26. Texas Tech was finally able to win the all important opening set after a kill by Amanda Dowdy broke the 26-26 stalemate, followed by an attack error by Bulldog Terran Poindexter.
The Bulldogs never seemed to recover from the first set setback as they allowed the Red Raiders to finish with 14 kills and an impressive .400 hitting clip in TTU's six point second set victory. Gonzaga did tally 12 kills in the set, but had seven errors on 40 attempts for a tough .125 attacking percentage.
The 10 minute intermission did Gonzaga some good as it came out on fire for set three. Brosky and sophomore Kaprina Goodwin combined for seven of the Zags 13 kills, while junior Caitlin Cozad had two of her three blocks in the eight point victory.
The Zags could not sustain their momentum as they allowed a 7-7 tie to turn into a 17-11 Red Raider advantage in set four. Gonzaga could not overcome the deficit and Texas Tech claimed the match victory on a service ace by Amanda Dowdy.
Besides Brosky, Gonzaga had three other players finish with five or more kills. Goodwin and Boevers both added eight while Cozad registered six.
Sophomore setter Denise Van de Mortel dished out 34 assists as the Bulldogs finished with 49 total kills and a .146 hitting percentage.
Texas Tech had three players finish with double-figure kills, including Dowdy who tallied a match-high 20. Miara Cave added 15 and Barbara Conceicao had 12.
The Red Raiders held the advantage in digs at 57-51 while the Bulldogs had the edge in both blocks (7-5) and service aces (6-4).
Gonzaga continues play in the Radisson Tulsa Airport Invitational Saturday with matches against host Tulsa University at 10:30 a.m. and Stephen F. Austin at 2:30 p.m.
