Men's Soccer Ends Season Friday At Home Against USF

END OF REGULAR SEASON
BULLDOGS END SEASON AT HOME: Gonzaga University brings the curtain down on the 2009 season Friday when the University of San Francisco visits Gonzaga Soccer Field for a 1 p.m. match. The Bulldogs are 4-2-2 at home this season.
AVOIDING LAST PLACE: Gonzaga University and the University of San Francisco will be trying to avoid last place in the West Coast Conference chase. The two clubs are tied for sixth with 10 points but the Dons have a match in hand. Gonzaga is 3-7-1 while USF is 3-6-1 with a match Sunday at the University of Portland to conclude the regular season. The Bulldogs have just the one match this week. Depending on what else happens around the conference this final weekend of the regular season, Gonzaga could still finish tied for fourth with a win over USF.
FRIDAY THE 13TH: The last time Gonzaga University played a Friday the 13th match was Oct. 13, 2006, when the Bulldogs traveled to the University of Portland, the last of three Friday the 13th matches in Bulldog history. Gonzaga prevailed 2-1. The Bulldogs met the University of Tulsa on Sept. 13, 2002, at the Diadora Classic in Corvallis, Ore., Gonzaga losing 2-1. The first Friday the 13th match in Gonzaga's history was Oct. 13, 1995, at USF, the Dons taking a 3-0 victory.
BARNUM GARNERS HONOR: Gonzaga University senior men's soccer goalkeeper Scott Barnum was been named the West Coast Conference Co-Player of the Week last week. Barnum shared the award with another keeper in Loyola Marymount University senior Patrick Sampson. Despite losing two matches, Barnum was spectacular in goal for the Bulldogs on the road last week. Friday at LMU the Lions launched 23 shots, 14 on goal as Barnum made a career and season-high 12 saves to become Gonzaga's all-time single-season saves leader with 92, surpassing the 91 of Mike McCarthy in 2002. The match-tying goal for the Lions was a penalty kick. The Lions prevailed 2-1, but he made five saves on shots that appeared ticketed for the net only to making a diving or kick save to deny the Lions. Sunday at the University of San Diego the Toreros took 14 shots, eight on goal and the match was decided on a penalty kick in overtime. The native of Fall City, Wash., had seven saves - three tough saves to deny USD - to run his Gonzaga career-leading saves total to 99, which also leads the WCC this year. He had a .864 saves percentage for the week and his .824 saves percentage for the season leads the WCC. His 1.19 goals-against-average is fourth in the WCC.
BULLDOGS DROP ROAD PAIR: Gonzaga University struggles on the road continued last weekend, the Bulldogs losing 2-1 at Loyola Marymount University and 1-0 in overtime at league-leading University of San Diego. The Bulldogs took a 1-0 lead at LMU, but the Lions tied the contest on the rebound off a penalty kick then got the winning goal in the 71st minute. USD's goal came 32 seconds into overtime when the Bulldogs were called for a foul in the box and the Toreros converted the penalty kick. The Bulldogs finished 1-5-0 on the road in West Coast Conference play this season.
PENALTY KICKS: Gonzaga University has been a part seven penalty kicks this season. Opponents are 4-for-5 in the PK department against the Bulldogs, and the one miss rebounded right back to the kicker who found the net for a goal. The Bulldogs are a perfect 2-for-2 in penalty kicks. Nick Barclay's converted one against Saint Mary's College to break a scoreless tie and propel the Bulldogs to a 5-0 home victory. Ben Funkhouser has the other penalty kick for the Bulldogs this season. The last time the Bulldogs had two successful penalty kicks in a season with 2001.
ZAGS VS. DONS: Gonzaga University has had good success against the University of San Francisco in recent meetings, the Bulldogs going 5-1 in the last six matches with the Dons, including this year's 2-0 victory in the first meeting in San Francisco. Gonzaga captured last year's second meeting 3-2 at USF after the Dons had snapped a three-match losing streak to the Bulldogs with a 2-1 victory in Spokane. Prior to that the Bulldogs had swept the 2007 season series 1-0 at home and 2-0 at USF, and the Bulldogs captured the final meeting of the 2006 season 2-1 at home in double-overtime to snap a six-match winless streak against the Dons that had seen the Bulldogs go 0-5-1 in that stretch.
SENIOR FAREWELL: Six Gonzaga University seniors will play their final match of their Bulldog career Friday at home. Keeper Scott Barnum (Fall City, Wash.), defender Tim Muravez (Corvallis, Ore.), forward Tye Perdido (Kalua, Hawai'i), midfielder Ben Funkhouser (Spokane Valley, Wash.), defender Nick Barclay (Boise, Idaho) and midfielder Colin Harrison (Boulder, Colo.) will suit up for the final time in a Bulldog uniform. Harrison has another year of eligibility remaining but is an academic senior and will graduate in the spring and may not return for his final year of eligibility.
