Bulldogs Strong In Final Tune-Up For WCC Championship

MOSCOW, Idaho - Gonzaga University's men's and women's cross country teams got their final tune-ups for the West Coast Conference Championship in two weeks with some solid performances at the Inland Northwest Cross Country Challenge hosted by the University of Idaho late Saturday afternoon.
The Bulldogs men defeated the University of Idaho 25-33 and Washington State University 28-31, while Eastern Washington University downed the Bulldogs 25-31 in the dual meeting scoring format. The Gonzaga women downed EWU 15-50 and Idaho 26-31.
Corrina O'Brien turned in a solid performance, finishing second in 17:59.49 over the 5K course. Katie Fenton of the University of Calgary edged O'Brien with a winning time of 17:55.73.
Elizabeth Slamkowski was eighth in 18:35.93 to give the Bulldogs two runners in the top 10. Brittany O'Regan was 11th in 18:49.09 to lead a strong contingent of Bulldogs in the second 10. Molly Funk was 13th in 18:53.41, Lacey Nation 14th in 18:54.74, Lauren Bergam 17th in 19:05.06 and Laura Volcheff 18th in 19:07.15.
The men got a strong outings from their top six in particular, all of which bettered their 2009 8K time. Chris Boyle finished 10th in 25:08.39 over the 8K UI Golf Course layout. Brett Withers was 16th in 25:24.02, Matt Bejar 23rd in 25:43.42, Brad Kachigan 26th in 25:48.87, Ian Berge 27th in 25:49.09 and Lucas Rothenberger 28th in 25:49.85.
Paul Limpf, running unattached, won the men's race in 24:20.64.
"It was a good tune-up heading into the conference meet," Gonzaga head coach Pat Tyson said. "We had a lot of runners who were a little under the weather with colds, but I thought overall they did a great job. I think we're starting to hit our peak at the right time and look for continued progress at the WCC meet."
The WCC Championship is Oct. 30 at 9 a.m. at Crystal Springs in Belmont, Calif. The men's race will be 8K with the women's race 6K.
