SPOKANE, Wash. - Junior Tye Perdido's second goal of the match brought Gonzaga University from a two-goal deficit as the Bulldogs downed UMKC in the nightcap Friday on the opening day of the Gonzaga Nike Soccer Classic at Gonzaga Soccer Field.
The Bulldogs (2-2-1) and Cal State Bakersfield (2-5-0) will meet in a true championship match Sunday at 2 p.m. as the Roadrunners downed Oregon State University 1-0 in Friday's opener. OSU and UMKC meet at 11:30 a.m. Friday. The tournament pairings were pre-determined.
Tim Muravez chipped the ball into the box from the left wing and Perdido got off the shot in the ensuing melee in front of the goal for the match winner.
The Kangaroos, fresh off last Saturday's 1-0 win at second-ranked Creighton University, didn't waste any time getting on the scoreboard Friday. Brian Harris took Bryan Perez' thru ball and drilled a shot to the top left corner from 15 yards at 5:21, the goal his team-leading fourth of the season. It was the Kangaroos first shot of the match.
UMKC took a 2-0 halftime lead when Diego Rojas took a thru ball from Levi Coleman, avoided the Gonzaga defender and got off a shot from 12 yards out that beat Bulldog keeper Scott Barnum.
The best scoring chance for the Bulldogs in the opening half came at 34:58 when Ben Funkhouser hit the crossbar from close range.
Gonzaga, which held a 25-11 shots advantage in the match, kept peppering balls in the second half. Nick Barclay's shot from 20 yards straightaway was batted out of bounds by UMKC keeper Ken Cooper at 49:20, and three minutes later Funkhouser took a pass from Philippe Garre on the left wing and beat Cooper from 12 yards to cut the deficit in half.
The Kangaroos had an excellent opportunity to regain the two-goal margin when the Bulldogs' Nick Heinrichs was called for a hand ball near the end line and the Roos were awarded a penalty kick. But Barnum got a hand on Perez' head-high PK and the ball sailed over the net.
Funkhouser's free kick from 25 yards at 76:56 hit the crossbar and Perdido's soft rebound shot was knocked out of harms way by Cooper. But Perdido headed in Nick Barclay's cross field left-to-right free kick at 87:17 to set up the overtime dramatics.
Perdido almost ended the match at 95:15 when his point blank shot while being closely defended by a pair of Roos was stuffed by Cooper.
UMKC did not have a shot in the overtime.
Barnum had three saves for the Zags, while Cooper turned away six shots.
In the opener, the Roadrunners survived a wild finish to hang on for the victory over the Beavers.
The lone goal came at 35:21 when Manny Guzman's header from 10 yards provided all the Beavers would need. The play began with a harmless free kick from the left wing, but Wayne Lampart headed the ball to Alberto Navarro who headed it to Guzman for the finish.
Steve Spangler, making his first start for the Beavers in goal this season, denied the Roadrunners' Chico Ruesga with a diving stop to his right off a free kick from 20 yards at 21:44.
OSU's Robby Christner, who set a NCAA record earlier this year for quickest goals with two within eight seconds, drilled the crossbar at 31:50 on a hard, high shot from 20 yards.
CSUB's Matt Shaxton almost increased the lead when he dribbled in on the right wing and Spangler deflected the shot past the far post at 61:19, and OSU's Colin Mitchell nearly had the equalizer at 70:01 when his header from close range off a cross skipped past the right post on the open net.
But the real heroics came at 71:33 when Christner's penalty kick was knocked down on a diving save by CSUB keeper Steve Trojanowski and then he snuffed Colin Mitchell's rebound attempt.
OSU held a 13-9 shots advantage and Trojanowski had seven saves while Spangler had three saves in the OSU nets. There were 36 fouls called in the match, 22 against the Beavers.
OSU, which played without the services of defender Daniel Leach who was sitting out due a red card issued in the previous match, will be without the services of Matt Drake Sunday. Drake was red carded at the end of Friday's match for spitting on an opponent, the card carrying an automatic one-game suspension.
