SEDONA, Ariz. - Mary Kate Morgan became the first Gonzaga University women's golfer to win a major tournament when she shot an even-par 72 Sunday to win the Red Rock Invitational by two strokes.
The tournament was played at the 6,089-yard, par 72 Oak Creek Country Club.
Morgan finished with a 4-over-par 148 to defeat first-round leader Sophia Choi of Northern Arizona University who shot a final-round 76 to go with an opening-round 74.
Morgan was tied for fourth after Saturday's 18 holes when she shot a 76 to trail the leaders by two strokes. Haley Brown of Portland State University, who shared the first-round lead with Choi, fired a 79 on Sunday and finished in a three-way tie for fourth. Kristin Swanson of the University of Montana was alone in third at 152 after a pair of rounds of 76.
NAU and the University of Texas-El Paso shared the team title at 623 for a 6-shot victory over PSU, while Gonzaga tied Grand Canyon University for ninth at 658.
Gonzaga will be idle until March 10-11 when the Bulldogs compete in the Northern Illinois Springlake Invitational in Sebring, Fla.
