POST FALLS, Idaho - Gonzaga University shot a season-best 314 to move from a tie for ninth into a tie for sixth, and UC-Riverside came from eight strokes off the first-day pace to capture the team title at the Inland Empire Women's Intercollegiate golf tournament Tuesday.
Lindsay Snowden followed her first-round 70 with a second-day 74 over the 5,977-yard, par 72 The Highlands Golf and Country Club course to capture medalist honors with a 144. Teammate Le-Anh Nguyen shot a 71 on Tuesday as only two golfers managed to break par. UCR shot a 299 to go with an opening day 307 for a 606 and an 8-shot victory over the Vandals. After posting a 299 on Monday, the Vandals limped home with a 315 on Tuesday to fall to second.
Gonzaga got a 76 from Mary Kate Morgan, a 77 from Sarah Sheffield and a 78 from Lacey Jo Manwaring to vault from a tie to ninth to a tie for sixth with Cal Poly at 635. Morgan finished with a 150 to tie for seventh to lead the Bulldogs. Gonzaga posted its best two rounds of the season after opening with a 321 on Monday. Cal Poly moved from last in the 11-team field following Monday's 322 to shoot a 313 and move up five notches in the team standings.
Carlie Allen of Eastern Washington University shot a 2-under-par 70 on Tuesday to go with an opening-round 75 to finish second at 145 in helping the Eagles take third with a 622.
The tournament was a 36-hole format because eight of the 11 teams in the field had competed in the 54-hole Lady Vandal Fall Invitational last Friday and Saturday.
Gonzaga will continue a hectic five-tournaments-in-five-weeks schedule when they travel to the University of Colorado next Monday and Tuesday to compete in the Heather Farr Invitational.
