FORT COLLINS, Colo. - The struggle continued for Gonzaga University's women's golf team on Tuesday as the Bulldogs fired a final-round 321 to slip into last place at the Ptarmigan Ram Fall Classic hosted by Colorado State University.
As was the case during Monday's opening 36 holes, the Bulldogs had just two players fire a sub-80 round in Tuesday's final 18 holes as the Bulldogs finished with a 54-hole total of 964. The Bulldogs, who led Weber State University by four strokes going into Tuesday's round, saw the WIldcats post a 309 to climb out of last place with a 956 and move ahead of Gonzaga.
The host Rams, who carried a 15-stroke lead into Tuesday's play, put the finishing touches on the tournament with a 295 Tuesday for a 54-hole score of 876 and a 26-shot advantage over rival University of Colorado and San Jose State University.
First-day co-leader Laura Luethke of Fresno State University shot a 71 for a 54-hole total of 213 and a 2-stroke win over Hannah Hoch of Colorado who also shot 71 on Tuesday to move into the runnerup spot. First-day co-leader Jessica Potter of the University of San Francisco finished with a 74 and fell into a two-way tie for third at 216.
A pair of freshmen were the story for the Bulldogs on Tuesday as Lacey Jo Manwaring of Blackfoot, Idaho, and Sarah Sheffield of Kea'au, HI, each shot a 78. Sophomore Mary Kate Morgan, who had the Bulldogs best round of the tournament with a second-round 75 on Monday, shot an 83 to tie with Sheffield for 62nd with 240. Jennifer Swanson and Manwaring each finished with 242 to tie for 66th.
The Bulldogs have two weeks to regroup before playing in the Vandal Women's Fall Classic Sept. 24-25 at the University of Idaho.
