SAN BRUNO, Calif. - San Bruno, Calif. - Senior Arni Pjetursson earned his second All-West Coast Conference first-team selection, and three other Bulldogs also received post-season honors in a vote of the conference coaches as the All-WCC men's soccer team was announced on Wednesday.
Junior Robert Anderson, sophomore John Palladino and freshman George Josten earned honorable mention accolades, and Josten was also named to the All-Freshman squad.
Pjetursson, a first-team All-WCC pick as a freshman in 2001 and an honorable mention pick last season, paced the Bulldogs with 13 points this season on five goals and three assists to tie for eighth in the WCC scoring race. His five goals tied for fifth. The senior from Reykjavik, Iceland, finished his career with 15 goals for seventh on the all-time GU list, 13 assists for a tie for fourth and 43 points for fifth.
Anderson, a native of Boise, Idaho, was also an honorable mention selection his freshman season of 2002 and continued to anchor the Bulldog defense again this season. Palladino, a local product out of Spokane, was an honorable mention recipient a year ago from his midfielder spot and was again a physical presence for the Bulldogs.
Josten, from Idaho Falls, Idaho, tied Pjetursson for the team goals lead with five and had an assist for 11 points.
After claiming their first WCC title since 1994, the University of San Francisco took home two of the conference's biggest soccer awards. Sophomore Aaron Chandler was named WCC Player of the Year, while head coach Erik Visser was named WCC Coach of the Year. Loyola Marymount University's Matt Kovar was named Defender of the Year, while the University of Portland's Michael Gavin claimed Freshman of the Year honors.
Chandler led the conference in goals with 12 and knocked home seven game-winners to help guide USF to its first post-season berth since 1994. At 14-4-1 overall, 9-3 in WCC play, Visser led the Dons to their best record since 1993. Kovar anchored an LMU defense that collected four conference shutouts and limited opponents to no more than two goals in a match during WCC play. Gavin started all 20 games on defense for Portland, helping the Pilots to their fourth straight NCAA Tournament appearance.
