Hayes Fifth After 36 Holes

Boise, Idaho - Gonzaga University's men's golf team returned to action for the first time in two weeks, but the layoff didn't seem to hurt the Bulldogs on the first day of the Boise State Bronco Round-Up on Monday.

The Bulldogs fired a season-best 277 in Monday's second round to go with an opening round of 287 and a 36-hole total of 564. That was good for fourth heading into Tuesday's final round as the Bulldogs find themselves just one stroke behind the host Broncos and six shots behind Weber State University and second place. Washington State University shot a 552 Monday for a 6-stroke lead over the other WSU in the tournament heading into Tuesday's final round.

Jimmy Hayes put together rounds of 69-67 for a 36-hole total of 136 over the 6,591-yard, par 71 Boise Ranch Golf Course layout and fifth place. He's just four strokes behind first-day leader Ben Bryson of Washington State who shot 67-65 for 132 and a 2-stroke lead over Cody Powers of Utah Valley State University. Greg Buck way of Weber State and Kevin Chen of Weber State are tied for third at 135.

Matt Munroe put together two rounds of 71 for a 142 and a tie for 15th, and Trevor Leo shot 73-70 for a 143 and a tie for 19th as the duo also aided the Gonzaga cause. Stud Bell and John Berggren each shot 147 to round out the Bulldog effort. Berggren rallied for an opening-round 78 to shoot a second-round 69.
