Crew Wraps Up Fall Season At Head Of The Lake

SEATTLE - Gonzaga University entered five boats in the annual Head of the Lake Regatta in Seattle with all five having decent showings as Gonzaga crew finished their 2003 fall season on Sunday morning. Gonzaga competed in two men's events and three women's events with two Gonzaga boats finishing in fourth place in their respective races.
In the men's varsity eight host the University of Washington won the event as they covered the 4,800 meter course at Montlake Cut in a time of 15:23. The Huskies were followed by the University of Victoria in second and Oregon State University in third, those two schools separated by only two seconds in their finish times. Gonzaga's varsity eight finished in seventh place with a time of 16:43.
In the women's varsity eight competition, Michigan State University claimed victory with a time of 17:18. The University of Virginia was second in the race at 17:24 and Stanford University third at 17:29. Gonzaga placed tenth in the event with a time of 18:03 but could move up to ninth place if a protest against the University of Victoria is upheld and all remaining boats move up one spot.
The top two boats for Gonzaga on the day each finished in fourth place as GU's women's varsity four and men's third varsity eight each claimed fourth place finishes. In the women's varsity four event the University of Washington's A and B boats finished 1-2 with Simon Fraser University finishing in third place. Gonzaga was fourth with a time of 21:10. The men's third varsity eight was a boat comprised of novice rowers and covered the course in a time of 17:38 finishing behind Washington's top two boats and the University of Victoria.
Gonzaga's final entry of the day was in the women's junior varsity eight in which the Bulldogs finished fifth. Washington won the event with a time of 17:43 followed by Victoria at 18:03. Oregon State and Washington State University notched places three and four with Gonzaga in fifth at 18:53.
