Men's Crew Wins 15th Straight Fawley Cup

PULLMAN, Wash. - Gonzaga University men's varsity crew won its 15th straight Fawley Cup on Saturday afternoon as the Bulldogs swept all three races against Washington State University at Wawawai Landing on the Snake River outside of Pullman, Wash. Racing was pushed back one hour due to strong winds on the 2,000 meter course which forced teams to race through a rough chop of water when racing was eventually started. All teams were able to benefit from a slight tail wind on the course.
In the men's varsity eight race Gonzaga jumped out to an early lead and never looked back as the Bulldogs varsity eight crossed the finish line in 5:57.79, a nine-second victory over the Cougars who finished at 6:06.43. The junior varsity eight and freshman/novice eight races were a tad bit closer as Gonzaga edged out both those races by a four-second margin. The JV eight time for Gonzaga was 6:17.57 compared to 6:21.22 for WSU. Gonzaga's freshman eight rowed a time of 6:14.91 to defeat the Cougars novice crew with a time of 6:18.30.
Gonzaga's varsity eight line-up consisted of coxswain Elaine Parry, stroke Mark Voorhees, Pat Haffey, Max Malotky, Nathan Wilson, Matthew Wernette, Ben Foley, Connor Barry and bow David Hinshaw. The Bulldogs junior varsity eight included coxswain Mara Oblak, stroke Nick Talbot, Billy Votava, Mike Wall, Derek Clemmensen, James Toshack, Mike Demmert, Matt White and box Geoff Hills. Gonzaga's freshmen eight were coxswain Lauren Gadeken, stroke Max Malotky, David Hinshaw, Matthew Wernette, Derek Clemmensen, James Toshack, Mike Demmert, Matt White and box Geoff Hills.
Gonzaga will next venture to Sacramento, Calif., to compete in the West Coast Conference and Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships at Lake Natoma. The Bulldogs will be looking for their third unofficial WCC crown.
