END OF REGULAR SEASON
BULLDOGS TRY TO ESCAPE CELLAR: Gonzaga University, already denied one chance to escape the West Coast Conference men's soccer cellar last Sunday in the home finale, gets another Saturday when the Bulldogs visit Saint Mary's College. The Gaels bring a 1-4-0 record for 3 points in WCC play into the contest while the Bulldogs limp in with a 0-4-0 mark. Loyola Marymount University came to the Pacific Northwest last weekend without a WCC win to its credit in three tries and returned home with a pair of victories. The Lions defeated the University of Portland and then followed that with a 3-0 blitzing of Gonzaga to complete the first Pacific Northwest sweep of the Pilots and the Bulldogs in LMU history. Saturday's match will be the WCC final for the Gaels, while the Bulldogs conclude the regular season next week at the University of San Francisco. A SMC win on Saturday would relegate the Bulldogs to last place.
BERTRAM GAINS ACADEMIC HONOR: Gonzaga University senior forward Scott Bertram became the first College Sports Information Directors of America District VIII Academic All-America team. The Moses Lake, Wash., native carries a 3.58 GPA in business administration. He has started all 15 matches this season with 4 goals, 4 assists and 12 points. He scored the game-winning goal against UNLV in a 3-2 victory and Gonzaga came from a 2-0 deficit in the final five minutes. He is currently tied for seventh in the West Coast Conference scoring race, is tied for ninth in goals and ranks sixth in assists. He was one of three WCC selections to the 11-man team.
SCORING DROPS: With 25 goals this season, Gonzaga University has more than surpassed the 16 goals the Bulldogs had last season. But in West Coast Conference play the offensive production has dwindled as the Bulldogs have scored just four goals in four matches, two of those in a 3-2 overtime setback to the University of Portland. The four goals are tied for the lowest output in WCC play this season. Conversely, the Bulldogs have surrendered 10 goals in WCC play, only one less than the 11 this week's foe - Saint Mary's College - has given up in five matches.
HOME SETBACKS: Gonzaga University finished the home season 1-4-0 with last weekend's pair of losses. Gonzaga is 2-4-0 in true road games and 2-1-1 in neutral contests this season.
STREAK REACHES SIX: Gonzaga University's losing streak reached six with last weekend's two losses, the longest losing streak since 1994. It's the longest losing streak in head coach Einar Thorarinsson's nine years at the helm.
OUT FOR THE SEASON: Gonzaga University head coach Einar Thorarinsson said defenders Robert Anderson (knee), Grayson Tenney (ankle) and Daniel Scott (ankle) will not return to action this season. Head coach Einar Thorarinsson was hopeful Tenney and Scott would be healthy to pay in one of the final two matches.
BULLDOGS VS. GAELS: When Gonzaga University and Saint Mary's College meet on Saturday the Bulldogs will be trying to hold onto their lead in the series, which currently favors Gonzaga 5-4-1. The Gaels won the first three meetings in the series, but the Bulldogs have bounced back to go 5-1-1 in the last seven outings and are undefeated in the last three meetings. The Bulldogs posted victories in 2000 and 2001, then the teams played to a 1-1 overtime deadlock last year in a match in Spokane halted after the first overtime because of darkness. Gonzaga posted a 1-0 shutout in 2001 in their last trip to Moraga, Calif.
END OF SEASON: Only one match remains in the season for Gonzaga University following Saturday's match at Saint Mary's College. The Bulldogs conclude the 2003 campaign at the University of San Francisco next Saturday at 1 p.m.
LIVE ON THE INTERNET: All Gonzaga University home matches as well as all West Coast Conference road matches will be available via Livestats on the Internet at http://www.gozags.com. Some non-conference matches may also be available. Check the Gonzaga web site for all Livestats links.
WIN NUMBER 200 PUT ON HOLD: With just two matches remaining this season, Gonzaga University head coach Einar Thorarinsson will have to wait until next season to record his 200th career victory. He has 197 wins as he concludes his 18th year on the sidelines.
THE THORARINSSON TALE OF THE TAPE: Gonzaga University head coach Einar Thorarinsson is 78-62-10 in his ninth season with the Bulldogs. His overall record is 197-114-23 that includes nine seasons across town at Whitworth College. After going 3-10-2 in his first season of 1995, the Bulldogs have had winning seasons in six of the last season seasons under Thorarinsson. His teams led the West Coast Conference in wins with a 14-4-0 record in 1997 and 12-4-2 mark in 1998, capturing WCC co-championships in each of those seasons. The Bulldogs were 9-5-2 in 2001, making their inaugural College Cup appearance.
