WOMEN'S SOCCER NOTES - WEEK 7
FRIDAY - OCTOBER 10
Gonzaga vs. Montana, 3 p.m.
SUNDAY - OCTOBER 12
Gonzaga at Portland, 1 p.m.
SPLITTING A PAIR: The Gonzaga University women's soccer team will split the weekend at home and on the road as they open West Coast Conference play on Sunday. First on Friday, the Bulldogs host the University of Montana at 3 p.m. on Martin Field as they look to continue their four-match home win streak. Then Gonzaga travels to defending 2002 National Champions University of Portland to open WCC play on Sunday, Oct. 12 at 1 p.m.
SHUT OUT AND SHUT DOWN: The Gonzaga University women's soccer team gained its first two shutouts of the season last weekend with victories over the University of Wyoming and University of Northern Iowa. Freshman Amy MacIntyre scored her first collegiate goal to lead the Zags to the 1-0 victory over Wyoming to mark the first shutout. Junior Ashley Pryor scored on Sunday in Gonzaga's 1-0 shutout against Northern Iowa for her second goal of the season. Sophomore goalkeeper Ashley Haugen marked eight saves in each game while posting two season shutouts.
GOING STREAKING: The Gonzaga University women's soccer team is the longest win streak in program history with its fourth consecutive win over University of Northern Iowa on Sunday afternoon. The streak surpasses the previous program record of three, as the team is off to the best season start in history also with a 7-4 record. The Bulldogs look to extend this streak to five matches in Friday's match against University of Montana.
CREATING HER OWN STILE: Head coach Shannon Stiles continues to make her mark on Gonzaga University and West Coast Conference athletics as she enters her fifth year with the Bulldogs. As the first female head women's soccer coach in the history of the WCC, Stiles also became the Gonzaga career coaching leader in victories as she collected her 16th career win with a 1-0 victory over the University of Idaho (10-31-02). Stiles made history as the Bulldogs won its first season opener since the program came into existence in 1991 with a victory over Portland State University on Aug. 29th. Stiles looks to continue the Bulldogs' success as the team drastically improved from a 0-15-2 finish in 2001 to a 6-13-0 record at the end of the 2002 season. This season Stiles has already achieved new feats for the team as the team owns a new program record for win streak and has the best season record as this point in history at 7-4.
LIVE ON THE INTERNET: All Gonzaga University home matches as well as all West Coast Conference road matches will be available via Livestats on the internet at http://www.gozags.com. Some non-conference matches may also be available. Check the Gonzaga web site for all Livestats links.
SCOUTING THE GRIZZLIES: The Gonzaga University women's soccer team wraps up its four game homestand on Friday, Oct. 10 at 3 p.m. as the Bulldogs play host to University of Montana. The Grizzlies travel to Martin Field after splitting their weekend with a 0-1 loss at Colorado College and a 1-0 win over United States Air Force Academy. The weekend left Montana with a 4-6-2 record. The Grizzlies return junior midfielder Jamie Rizzuto, who leads the team with four goals. Rizzuto has played in all 12 of Montana's games and has notched two assists. The Grizzlies also look towards goalkeeper Sara Braseth to lead the team. Braseth has recorded three shutout victories during the 2003 season, along with 63 saves. Braseth was voted Most Valuable Player for the 2002 season on the Montana team.
BULLDOGS VS. THE GRIZZLIES: Gonzaga University and the University of Montana look to their 13th meeting in program history. The Grizzlies lead the series 12-0 as Montana defeated the Bulldogs 3-1 during the 2002 season.
SCOUTING THE PILOTS: The University of Portland plays host to Gonzaga University as the defending 2002 College Cup Champions to open West Coast Conference play. The Pilots face the Bulldogs with a 10-2 record on the season with two wins last weekend over University of Oregon and Oregon State University. The Pilots return six from their 2002 starting lineup including senior defender Imani Dorsey, named WCC Player of the Month for September. Nine of the ten Portland wins have come from shutout, in part to Dorsey's leadership in the backfield. The Pilots look to repeat last year's success as they have improved their record, ranked opponents record, and goals for/against record from the 2002 season.
BULLDOGS VS. THE PILOTS: The Pilots of the University of Portland hold an 11-0 record over Gonzaga University. Last season, the Bulldogs held the Pilots to a 0-0 tie at halftime, but were defeated 4-1 by Portland.
FABULOUS FRESHMEN: The Gonzaga University women's soccer team boasts one of the best recruiting classes on the West Coast and isn't afraid to prove it. Freshmen Beth Drollinger, Amy MacIntyre, Megan Trammell and Brittney Fracolli have become regular starters in the Bulldogs' lineup with appearances by Sianna Garrod and Traci Dallas. Drollinger and MacIntyre remain the only freshmen on the lineup to score for the Bulldogs, with one goal each. Last weekend, MacIntyre scored the only goal for the Gonzaga shut out over University of Wyoming. The Bulldogs' recruiting class was ranked 16th in the NCAA Div. I Western Region and 87th on a national level, according to Soccer Buzz magazine.
