Fri., Oct. 31 - San Diego, 2 p.m.
Sun., Nov. 2 - Loyola Marymount, 1 p.m.
BULLDOGS END HOME SEASON: Gonzaga University will make its final home appearances of the season this weekend, hosting the University of San Diego on Friday at 2 p.m. and Loyola Marymount University on Sunday at 1 p.m. in a pair of West Coast Conference matches. Gonzaga has dropped its last two home outings, 1-0 against Cal Poly and 3-2 in overtime to the University of Portland.
SENIORS BID ADIEU: Three Gonzaga University seniors will make their final Martin Field appearances this weekend. Defender Scott Bertram (Moses Lake, Wash.), defender Charles Wells (Athol, Idaho) and midfielder Scott Yuska (Corte Madera, Calif.) will don the home jersey for the final time.
ANOTHER RANKED FOE: For the third straight match Gonzaga University will be facing a ranked foe when 10th-ranked University of San Diego visits Friday for a 2 p.m. The Toreros garnered the No. 10 spot in the College Soccer News rankings this week. USD is 12th in the Soccer Times balloting and 19th in the Soccer America poll. Santa Clara University was ranked 8th by Soccer Times and the University of Washington 11th by College Soccer News when the Bulldogs faced those squads each of the past two weeks, respectively. Gonzaga is 12-22-3 all-time against ranked teams.
HUSKIES WIN DOGFIGHT: The University of Washington won last Sunday's dogfight against Gonzaga University, taking a 1-0 verdict at Husky Soccer Field. The Huskies remained undefeated against the Bulldogs, running their series record to 17-0-1 against their cross-state foes.
INJURY UPDATE: The injury situation remained status quo for Gonzaga University last week. Robert Anderson (knee), Grayson Tenney (ankle) and Daniel Scott (ankle) remain sidelined this week. Tenney continues to improve, and head coach Einar Thorarinsson is still hopeful the sophomore defender from Bend, Ore., will be able to play again this season. Scott sprained his ankle against Santa Clara University and is doubtful again this weekend, and Anderson is out for the season.
SCORING RACE TIGHT: Heading into the final four matches of the season the individual scoring race for Gonzaga University is still up for grabs. Arni Ingi Pjetursson holds a slim 15-13 lead over Scott Yuska. Scott Bertram is well within striking distance at 12 points and Kari Arnason is in the hunt with 10 points. The quartet is also in a battle for the goals race - Pjetursson and Yuska with five each, Bertram and Arnason with four each. Pjetursson also leads in assists with five, followed by Bertram (4) and Yuska (3).
CO-LEADERS: Although not out of the title picture themselves despite an 0-2-0 West Coast Conference record, Gonzaga University will look to crawl back into the chase and play the role of spoiler on Friday. The University of San Diego comes to town 11-2-3 overall and 3-0-0 in the WCC and tied for the league lead with Santa Clara University with nine points.
LOOKING FOR "W": Loyola Marymount University comes to the Pacific Northwest this week seeking its first West Coast Conference victory of the season. The Lions are winless in three WCC outings and visit the University of Portland on Friday prior to Sunday's game in Spokane against Gonzaga University.
BULLDOGS VS. TOREROS: The University of San Diego enjoys a 7-3-1 edge in the all-time series with Gonzaga University, but the Bulldogs have closed the gap since their early days in the WCC. Gonzaga lost at USD 9-1 in 1992, the year prior to the Bulldogs joining the conference. USD wasn't any kinder once Gonzaga got into the WCC fray, winning 4-0, 5-0 and 5-0 the first three years Gonzaga was in the league. But the Bulldogs are 2-1-1 in the last four meetings, including last year's 3-2 overtime win at USD, the first GU win in San Diego in six tries.
BULLDOGS VS. LIONS: Since joining the West Coast Conference in 1993, Gonzaga University has had the most success against Loyola Marymount University among WCC foes. The Bulldogs lead the all-time series 8-2-1 that includes a 3-1 win at LMU in 1992, the year prior to the Bulldogs joining the conference. The Bulldogs had a 4-game winning streak in the series snapped last season with a 1-0 setback at LMU. Gonzaga won the last meeting between the teams in Spokane, 4-1 in 2001.
FINDING THE WIN COLUMN: Gonzaga University's current 4-game losing streak is the longest since Einar Thorarinsson's first season as head coach in 1995 when the Bulldogs went 3-10-2 overall and lost four straight at mid-season.
LIVE ON THE INTERNET: All Gonzaga University home matches as well as all West Coast Conference road matches will be available via Livestats on the Internet at http://www.gozags.com. Some non-conference matches may also be available. Check the Gonzaga web site for all Livestats links.
THE THORARINSSON TALE OF THE TAPE: Gonzaga University head coach Einar Thorarinsson is 78-60-10 in his ninth season with the Bulldogs. His overall record is 197-112-23 that includes nine seasons across town at Whitworth College. After going 3-10-2 in his first season of 1995, the Bulldogs have had winning seasons in six of the last season seasons under Thorarinsson. His teams led the West Coast Conference in wins with a 14-4-0 record in 1997 and 12-4-2 mark in 1998, capturing WCC co-championships in each of those seasons. The Bulldogs were 9-5-2 in 2001, making their inaugural College Cup appearance.
