PORTLAND - Natasha Kozen had a career-high 27 kills on Saturday night but it was enough to help Gonzaga University secure its first conference win as the Bulldogs (3-19, 0-7 WCC) remained winless in West Coast Conference play after a 3-2 setback at the University of Portland (11-11, 1-6 WCC). The Pilots rallied to wins games four and five as they pulled out the win by scores of 29-31, 31-29, 25-30, 30-28, 15-12.
Gonzaga had a solid attacking performance all night as the Bulldogs finished with a .221 attack percentage and 74 kills. In addition to Kozen's 27 kills, three other Bulldogs reached double figures with Christina Davis adding a double-double at 17 kills and 14 digs. Abby Cullen was limited to just 11 kills on 29 attacks while Lauren Armas also added 11 kills.
Portland was a little less effective on the attack with only a .195 attacking percentage as both teams finished with 74 kills. The Pilots had 236 attacks on the night as Sara Vercruyssen had a match-high 29 kills on 83 attack attempts. The Pilots gained the much needed additional points on the serve as they dropped in 13 service aces. Murphy McClenahan had five of the 13 aces.
Both teams played solid defense with each squad finishing with 100 or more kills. Portland finished at 100 even with Ali Boaz leading the Pilots with 26. Heather Signor was again the defensive standout for the Bulldogs as she had 35 digs, Gonzaga finishing with 116. The 35 digs set a new school-record for digs in match passing the former standard of 34 set by Linda Bushinski against Pepperdine in 1988.
The Bulldogs will regroup and look to pick up their first WCC win of the season next week on the road as they travel to San Diego and Santa Clara.
