SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Gonzaga University's men's soccer team remained winless in six outings at Buck Shaw Stadium on Saturday as 8th-ranked Santa Clara University edged the Bulldogs 2-1 in a West Coast Conference match.
The Bulldogs (5-6-1; 0-2-0) have only a tie to show against SCU (10-2-3; 2-0-0) in dropping their fourth straight contest at Buck Shaw Stadium. The teams played to a 1-1 overtime deadlock in 1995, Gonzaga now 0-5-1 at SCU since joining the WCC for the 1993 season.
The defeat was especially tough for the Bulldogs who had a man advantage for the final 57:56 of the match after SCU midfielder Audren Cashman was issued a red card at 32:04 after a midfield tackle.
The Broncos grabbed the early lead as Will Weatherly scored his fifth goal of the season at 11:12, Kelechi Igwe's side pass shot to the middle of the net past freshman Kris Wright, making his third start of the season and his first in WCC play.
Gonzaga tied the match at 16:58 when Arni Ingi Pjetursson scored his fifth goal of the season to tie Scott Yuska for the team lead. Scott Bertram got the assist as Pjetursson's one-touch on a slant pass eluded Broncos keeper Steve Cronin.
The decisive goal came at 63:14 when Erik Ustruck scored his second goal of the campaign on an assist from Jason Cunliffe. Ustruck was streaking down the right side when he took the pass and beat Wright high.
SCU held a 13-6 edge in shots and the Bulldogs did not have a shot on goal among their three second-half shots, Cronin called on for two first-half saves in the SCU net. SCU, meanwhile, kept pressure on Wright and the Bulldogs as the freshman keeper from Spokane was called on for four second-half saves among his seven saves for the match.
Gonzaga remains on the road next Sunday as the Bulldogs face the University of Washington in a non-conference match. The Bulldogs play their final home matches of the season Oct. 31 against the University of San Diego and Nov. 2 against Loyola Marymount University in a pair of WCC contests.
