Crew Takes Third And Fifth In CAL Cup Grand Final

SAN DIEGO - Gonzaga's men's varsity eight crew finished third while the women's varsity eight finished in fifth during the CAL Cup Grand Finals held Sunday afternoon at 2001 San Diego Crew Classic at Mission Bay.
The men's boat made up of Dave Johnson, Justin Toenes, Brad Hughes, Jeff Kiely, Mark Voorhees, Mike Peterson, Travis Lamb, Jacob Morelan and coxswain Paul Williams finished in third place in the CAL Cup Grand Final after winning their heat race on Saturday morning. Gonzaga finished just two seconds behind second place Trinity (Conn.) College while UC-Davis won the race at 6:26.7. Gonzaga's time was 6:34.22 while Trinity finished at 6:32.09. Gonzaga will meet UC-Davis next weekend as the two schools meet for a dual regatta in Spokane. Racing will take place at Silver Lake with a start time still to be determined. Virginia, San Diego and San Diego State rounded out the CAL Cup order.
The women's boat consisting of Nickie Lustig, Bonnie Corbin, Maria Bokulich, Vicki Olson, Breah Niemiec, Bridget Troy, Alexis Skipitis, Julie Yates and coxswain Courtney Haase finished in fifth place in the CAL Cup Grand Final behind several more experienced squads. Gonzaga did finish one second ahead of the University of San Diego, the Zags major competition for the West Coast Conference Rowing title which will be contested in three weeks at Lake Natoma in Sacramento. Tulsa won the event with a time of 7:14.60, defeating Tennesse by nearly five seconds. Gonzaga finished at 7:25.39 defeating San Diego's mark of 7:26.39. North Carolina narrowly defeated Kansas State to take third place honors. Gonzaga will also compete against UC-Davis in a dual regatta in Spokane next week.
