Gonzaga Women's Varsity 8 Beats Top-Ranked UC-Davis

MEDICAL LAKE, Wash. - Gonzaga University's women's varsity 8 crew defeated the University of California-Davis, the top-ranked NCAA Division II squad, by 8 seconds Saturday in a dual race on Silver Lake, while the Bulldogs men's varsity 8 showed a 6-second improvement against UC-Davis from a week ago.
The Gonzaga women posted the only victory of the day in the six-race program, finishing in 6:56.9 to the 7:08.2 of the Aggies. The women's varsity 8 consisted of stroke Nickie Lustig, Bonnie Corbin, Maria Bokulich, Vicki Olson, Breah Niemiec, Bridget Troy, Alexis Skipitis, Julie Yates and coxswain Courtney Haase.
"Davis is always a good test for us," head coach Glenn Putyrae said. "We've split the last couple of years. They gave us everything we wanted in the first 1,000 meters."
UC-Davis is the two-time defending NCAA Division II champion.
The Bulldog men, meanwhile, finished third by 8 seconds to UC-Davis last weekend in the CAL Cup Grand Final in San Diego. But the boat of stroke Dave Johnson, Justin Toenes, Brad Hughes, Jeff Kiely, Mark Voorhees, Mike Peterson, Travis Lamb, Jacob Morelan and coxswain Paul Williams closed the gap to one boat length this time. The Aggies won in 6:05.1 to Gonzaga's 6:07.1. UC-Davis won last week in 6:26.7, while the Bulldogs finished in 6:34.2
"I thought we turned in a good effort," Gonzaga director of rowing and head men's coach Dan Gehn said. "They best us handily last weekend, but I think we came out and surprised them in the first 500 meters today. We pushed back a couple of times and then it was back-and-forth until they pulled away in the final 500 meters. We have two weeks to pick up speed for the WIRA's (Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association)."
UC-Davis also won the men's novice 8, women's novice 8, women's varsity 4 and men's composite 8 on Saturday.
