SPOKANE, Wash. - Gonzaga University junior forward Sara Streufert has become the school's inaugural West Coast Conference first-team selection in Gonzaga's 7-year conference affiliation, while Santa Clara University's Mandy Clemens earned her third straight WCC Player of the Year accolade in awards announced Tuesday.
A 1997 graduate of Spokane's University High, Streufert broke her single-season school scoring record with 12 goals this season, surpassing her previous record of 10 set last season. She has 31 goals and 71 career points, both also school records. she earned honorable mention honors each of the past two seasons. Gonzaga went 7-13-0 this year under first-year head coach Shannon Stiles, falling one win shy of matching the school single-season win record.
The league's career leader in assists, Clemens was the unanimous choice of the coaches and is on the All-WCC first team for the third time. She became the conference's first three-time Player of the Year.
The three-time champion Broncos, ranked number one in all the polls entering the NCAA tournament, placed a record six players on the first team and a total of 13 overall. Included on that list is senior forward Jacqui Little, who became just the fifth player in league history to make the All-WCC first team four times. Little (20-6-46) and Clemens (20-21-61), both All-Americans, are just the third set of WCC teammates to score 20 goals in the same season. Both rank in the league's top three in career scoring.
Another Bronco All-America selection, two-time first team pick Nikki Serlenga, gained the Defender of the Year honor for anchoring SCU's solid midfield. Santa Clara allowed just nine goals all season en route to a perfect 20-0-0 mark.
SCU midfielder Aly Wagner won the Freshman of the Year award after scoring seven goals and contributing ten assists to the highest scoring offense in WCC history. She is the fourth straight Bronco player to earn the award. Four rookies made the first team, the most since five made the list in 1992.
SCU head coach Jerry Smith and Saint Mary's head man Paul Ratcliffe share the Coach of the Year honor. The recognition is the fifth in Smith's 13-year career, his third in a row. It is the first for Ratcliffe, who, in just his second season, led the Gaels to a school-best 13-4-1 mark and second place tie in the WCC.
