Gonzaga men's tennis head coach
D.J. Gurule has announced the hiring of Kris Powell (KP) as the program's new assistant coach. Powell joins the Bulldogs following an impressive run as the head men's and women's tennis coach at Illinois Tech, where he established himself as one of the top rising coaches in collegiate tennis.
"We're excited to welcome Kris Powell as our new assistant tennis coach at Gonzaga," Gurule said. "KP brings a proven track record of success from Illinois Tech, where he built a nationally respected program through tireless recruiting, player development, and a commitment to excellence. His leadership and vision elevated Illinois Tech to new heights, and we're confident he'll bring that same energy and impact to Gonzaga men's tennis."
"I am absolutely thrilled to join the Gonzaga family," Powell said. "I want to thank DJ and the rest of the athletic department for this great opportunity to coach athletes in such a competitive and holistic environment. When I stepped on campus for the first time, I was immediately drawn in by its atmosphere. I feel privileged to join the department and I look forward to becoming an asset to the players on and off the court."
During his tenure at Illinois Tech, Powell led both programs to multiple Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) championship finals, including conference titles with the men's team in 2022 and 2024. Under his leadership, the Scarlet Hawks earned NCAA Division III Tournament berths in both championship seasons and advanced to the second round each time. He was recognized as the NACC Men's Tennis Coach of the Year three straight times from 2022 through 2024.
Prior to his head coaching role at Illinois Tech, Powell spent six seasons as an assistant coach for the men's and women's programs at the University of Chicago, helping guide the teams to three NCAA semifinal appearances, seven quarterfinals, and mentoring over 30 All-Americans. His work there earned him the 2018 ITA NCAA Men's Assistant Coach of the Year award.
A former Division I student-athlete himself, Powell played collegiately at Prairie View A&M, where he helped lead the Panthers to two Southwestern Athletic Conference titles and an NCAA tournament appearance in 2010.
Powell begins his new role immediately as the Bulldogs gear up for the 2025-26 campaign.
