Men’s Tennis Drops to Hawaii, 4-3

HONOLULU, Hawaiʻi – Gonzaga men's tennis pushed Hawaiʻi to the wire Friday evening, earning three singles victories and competing on every court before falling 4-3.

The Zags opened the match in doubles with competitive play across all three courts. Nicholas Reeves and Oscar Rashed battled closely at No. 2, while Kent Mueller and Hikaru Takahashi kept their match tight on court three. Hawaiʻi ultimately secured the doubles point with wins on courts two and three, while the top doubles match was abandoned with Hawaiʻi narrowly ahead.

Gonzaga responded with an impressive showing in singles play, picking up points on three courts and forcing multiple three-set matches.

Jay Fairclough delivered a clutch comeback at No. 2 singles, rallying past Kosuke Nakanishi, 4-6, 7-5, 5-4, to put Gonzaga on the board. Oscar Rashed followed with a dominant turnaround at No. 3, dropping just three games after the opening set to defeat Timothy Li, 2-6, 6-1, 6-2.

Nicholas Reeves added Gonzaga's third singles victory at No. 4, grinding out a three-set win over Toa Maeda, 7-6(0), 3-6, 6-2.

Hawaiʻi clinched the match with victories on the remaining courts despite strong efforts from the Zags. Giovanni Branchetti faced Azuma Visaya at No. 1, while Tom Dunlop and Diego Herrera pushed their matches to three sets at Nos. 5 and 6.
