Bulldogs Open Season with 1-1 Draw at Utah Tech

Bazia scores the goal for GU

ST. GEORGE, Utah – Gonzaga men's soccer opened its 2025 season on the road Thursday night, battling to a 1-1 draw against Utah Tech at Greater Zion Stadium.

After a scoreless first half, the Bulldogs struck first in the 64th minute when senior forward Alex Bazia converted from the penalty spot to give Gonzaga a 1-0 advantage. The Trailblazers answered quickly, however, with Tanner Dutra finding the equalizer just two minutes later off a pass from Colby Lee.

Gonzaga controlled much of the action, finishing with a 22-7 edge in total shots and a 6-2 advantage in shots on target. Bazia and sophomore Ian Silva paced the Bulldog attack with four shots apiece, while Nicolas Golesis added three, including two on frame.

In goal, Chema Preciado played all 90 minutes for the Zags, while Utah Tech's goalkeeper Stockton Short recorded five saves to keep the match level.

The contest featured a physical edge, with 22 combined fouls and three yellow cards, along with a first-half red card issued to Utah Tech.

With the result, Gonzaga opens the season at 0-0-1. The Bulldogs stay in Utah to play Utah Valley this Sunday, Aug. 24, at 2 p.m. Pacific Time.
