
Track: Zags Ink Pair of New Records at Spokane Sports Showcase

Armbruster, Collins set new program bests in the 400m, 800m
SPOKANE, Wash. – In their first action of 2024, the Gonzaga men's and women's track teams returned to The Podium for the Spokane Sports Showcase on Friday as 11 Zags marked new PRs amidst two new program indoor records.
Gonzaga opened the day in the women's one mile run, with Anna Grabowski (4:58.47) placing second overall to lead all Bulldog runners. Olivia Hobbs (5:00.94), Jessica Frydenlund (5:03.84), and Lucy Klebeck (5:04.37) all cracked the top ten in the event.
In the men's mile, it was all Wil Smith in the final 300m, picking up a three-second victory with a time of 4:04.62. Smith returned to The Podium for the first time since last year when he broke the venue and program record in the mile, notching a sub-four minute mark. Carp Mukai placed ninth on Friday with a time of 4:16.93.
Ellie Armbruster broke the first program record of the day in the 400m race, improving her previous record with a 57.32, sixth place time. Armbruster came from behind to win her heat, and Bailee Carr secured the program second-best time of 1:00.18 in her GU 400m debut.
Willow Collins and Alicia Anderson headlined the Zags' finish in the 800m race. Both would break the previous 800m indoor record, but it was Collins (2:12.40) who narrowly edged Anderson (2:12.48) to secure the record and a second place overall finish. Emma Larson earned a PR in the same event, placing 19th with a time of 2:25.10.
In the Zags' final event of the afternoon, Sam Geiger won his second event of the 2023-24 season to lead Gonzaga in the men's 3000m race. The Bulldogs swept the first six placements, leading the way for the entirety of the race. Geiger (First, 8:13.67), Logan Law (Second, 8:15.71), and Bryce Cerkowniak (Third, 8:20.24) each picked up new PRs, while Jacob Alfonso (Fourth, 8:20.98), Drew Kolodge (Fifth, 8:23.24), and Cooper Laird (Sixth, 8:30.17) completed the six-man sweep.

The Zags will compete in the Spokane Indoor Challenge at The Podium beginning Friday evening with action continuing Saturday. GU will then head across the state to Seattle for the UW Invitational Jan 26-27.
